Just an update on the glove thing...

I ordered and recieved a pair of Cabela's Gortex Pinnacle XL winter mittens. The reviews there made them seem like just what I was looking for. Two nights ago I wore them at my son's HS football game. The temp was in the 40's and there was almost no wind... and still my fingers were painfully cold!
The rest of my hand was cozy but the fingers... nope! This may not be a failure of the gloves since it is obvious that I must have almost no circulation to the ends of my fingers, but at almost $70 they would need to work better so they are going back. The problem is clearly my lack of ability to generate my own warmth in that area, so I am not trying to blame it all on the gloves. It's just that they didn't keep my fingers any warmer than the $10 pair I got at Tractor Supply.
So... still looking! Gonna check into more of the solutions offered here in the thread. Thanks all!

Sorry to hear that. I'm no doc, but it sounds, as other have mentioned, that you may have Raynaud's - my ex had it and I have a touch of it, as well.

I've had good luck with mittens and the chemical hand warmers. Hope you find something that works for you.

Looks like those mitts have finger dividers, kinda defeats the benefit of a mitt

It may have been said already (didn't read all the posts), but I work in the arctic and really nothing will keep you warm if you are just sitting and have poor circulation. I have issue with my hands and feet when I am not being real physical. Hand and feet warmers work but I will also just go inside and get warmed up. I agree with the posts that I did read that mention gortex. I will wear nothing else.

Just my $0.02, to keep the hands and feet warm it is imperative to keep the head and torso warm. The body shifts heat from extremities (hands/feet) if the head or torso is getting cold. I know it sounds basic but many people overlook the obvious sometimes.

That's absolutely correct. We lose 40% of our body heat through our heads. I wear a hat and a hood to keep the cold off my neck which makes a big difference.
The Burton's look like good mittens, Let us know how they work out, I may get a pair.

The Burton's are excellent. They have removable inserts that can handle down to 20 degrees by themselves. Put them inside the goretex mittens and you are talking sub-zero warmth! The mittens also have a built-in zipper pocket on the back of the hand for chemical warmers.

For head warmth this balaclava works well (assuming you don't mind looking like a Ninja) if you wear a hood or cap over it.

I use a trick when hunting, since I have too bone nicked on my left hand - woodworking, don't ask :D - they get painful when cold.

So the trick is something I learned from a book about hunting the polar regions. One pair of gloves and second pair of mittens over it. I use just bow hunting gloves and when it gets freezing, I slip rabbit mittens over it. Always warm and always ready to pull my hands out for the rifle. Same thing for tractor, gloves for precise work and mittens to steer and such.

I have a VERY long driveway right on top of a mountain with the wind and snow just a howling. It tkaes me a few hours to snow blow my whole driveway. i have treid MANY different glozes , some were quite expensive and some were not. but, the best one's I have found are these Carhartt's they work very well and are only about $20.00 and thye are super warm and super tough.

scesnick - How are your Carhartts holding up? I just returned a pair to TSC yesterday. The right glove came apart between the thumb and index finger after two months of daily use in the barn (shaking out hay, cleaning stalls, pushing wheel borrow, snow removal w/tractor). My TSC has no more insulated gloves of any brand, so I am looking again. This was my first pair of Carhartts and I really liked them until the failure. Previously, I was using Schmidt, which were lasting about three months (finger stitching would fail). This year the Schmidt material had changed and I did not think they looked as tough, so I tried the Carhartt. I don't think I would be happy trying to do my chores with mittens.
