My 98 year old next door neighbor and his friend both squirrel hunted with single shot 22's. He says they had open sights and usually got a head shot. 1 shot was all that was need. I sure could not do that. Ken Sweet

I guess I am loosing man points here today, as my favorite 22 is actually the wife's gun :(

10/22, Butler Creek fluted bull barrel, hogue stock, NcStar military style illuminated scope.

I want a MK III so bad I can taste it, but the conversation last Sunday went along the lines of, so you will then lay that one alongside the others you are not shooting.............................. I have been married too long ;)

But she is going on a trip soon, so the voice of reason won't be in the shop with me, and the voice of 14 year old son will say something like, that would be cool dad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :D

The picture is not my gun, but it's the same model in the same condition (Marlin 39a). It was my dad's first gun. (weapons he used in WWII don't count)

Something about a lever action gun that makes me feel like a movie star in an oater.:D:D

Sure you could. It only takes some practice. If you have issues holding a gun steady, use a support. If you have eye issues, get glasses or a scope. I really think that anyone can be trained to shoot well within any guns capabilities.

I've got a Remington 513S that is just stellar. I think it may have gotten some criticism over a heavy trigger (its a Remington) but the trigger on mine is nice and light. It is a beautiful gun. It full sized so it looks like a deer rifle. Nice wood, with nice checkering. Heavy barrel but not a bull barrel. Clip fed. Super accurate. Likes standard velocity bullets better than the high velocity stuff. It has a 4 power Leupold on it. It is heavy so it can be a handful to carry.

I've also got a stainless Ruger Mk. II pistol. There are nice pistols out there, Hi-Standards, Brownings etc, but I've never found them to be any more accurate or durable.

I also have this junky little thing called a Chipmunk. Made by Daisy. Everything is plastic but the bolt and the barrel. Cheap no-name scope. Still very accurate and functional. Loading the clip is a chore.

This is not my favorite 22....but it is an interesting gun I bought out of a Pawn Shop some years ago.....

A Daisy VL is a "caseless ammo" single-shot 22 caliber rifle. IIRC these were made in the late 50's and have a nylon stock. To open the action you pull the lever under the fore-stock and insert the cartridge (what looks like an asprin fused to a lead bullet) into the chamber. The lever also charges the gun with air at the same time it's opens the chamber.

When you squeeze the trigger you first hear (and feel) the air blast which ignites the powder on the bullet and then the crack of the gun firing - very similar to a 22 LR. Same velocities too. Kinda strange as you experience kinda a double whammy effect.....which destroys accuracy. :confused2:

There is nothing to eject....its all consumed upon firing. The ammo comes stacked in little plastic tubes....ten to a tube.

Soon after I bought this gun I purchased enough ammo to demo it for 6 lifetimes.

Nothing like waking up an old thread! My Sig 522 with Centerpoint 3x9 scope. Great fun and relatively accurate.... And cool looking to boot.

Kinda funny that this thread just popped back up.

I went to swappers day down in Johnstown this weekend. Happened to trade an old LH recurve bow that I only had $120 invested in for a Mossberg 144.

It is older but HEAVY. Big heavy barrel and it had the military style peep sites. The rear is an adjustable peep and the front has 4 options that "flip" up. A front ring/peep, two blades, and one of them thin blades with the ball on top.

I was just out messing at 20yards (where I sight in for squirrel) and was able to fire all 7 shots and it just left 1 big hole about 1/2" diameter:thumbsup:

Very impressive for no scope and an old gun, I think.
