Generators Diesel vs PTO

You may want to start out getting a couple of 5 gallon jugs of fuel first to see how much you use.

Sure , will Attempt ( Big word there ATTEMPT ! Me and camera don't see eye to eye all the time ) to post pictures of the control unit / hour meter and the actual perkins unit . A little dark outside right now plus the fact that it is 16 degrees on my back deck makes for some stay in the house time .

Now , keep in mind , I would NOT run my TC30 at / above RPM's for maximum PTO speed ( seems like that is around 2200 ??? ) , but there are many diesel units that Do run at that speed on a constant basis with little if any problems . The unit I have is a Auxiliary power unit on my semi . Powers a 6000 watt generator plus heating or cooling .

RigMaster Power - Product Overview

The above link shows the newer model , mine is 3 years old . Newer model runs at 2800 rpm's due to the EPA requirements and CARB , ( California B.S. ) , Were as mine runs at 3600 rpm's . Basically all still the same package other than newer engine design . Completely self contained unit that is a huge fuel saver .

We have a Kubota 11Kw genny at work that was used on a remote project with 4600+ hours on it. I believe it turns 3600rpm. Thats a lot of hours. These gennys are very pricey but they last a long time if properly cared for.

I have a two speed PTO on my B2320.....has anybody here used a smaller KW rated PTO generator (as less HP required) and run it on higher PTO speed and just run the tractor engine at a lower speed to save on fuel/noise ....granted I know a phototach would be needed to attain 540 rpm's....Seems like this would be easier on fuel consumption and noise....No ?....Maybe it would purrr down and not scream....

i think the fuel savings is a pipe dream.

fuel usage on a good running diesel is going to be very directly related to load...

if you are making 7kw load on a 20 hp diesel or a 35 hp diesel.. I'd expect fuel usage to be near identical.

My thoughts lie with the others who suggested a NG/LP dedicated unit.

No need to store fuel as you have it available on demand and most of them auto start weekly and run a self test to keep everything going as it should. They also run much cleaner than gas or diesel.

Soundguy is right on the money, load equals fuel use, tractors are governed to run at certain RPM's and fuel automaticly is adjusted to maintain RPM's under load. I have run tractors with 10,000 hours on them and they still run, not many generators can say that. At some point not running is worse than running an engine. I routinely run my 1941 Farmall at PTO speeds for 10 to 12and even 14 hours making hay, I can't see where a generator would be any worse than that. I'll even bet for most compact tractors a little workout would do them good (other than mowing the lawn). By the way, who has just 1 tractor, poor people. LOL

That would be me. Poor people. But my tractor is growing. Maybe I've been feeding it too much.
