How much auger do you think my BX2660 would run? 19.5 PTO hp.

I suppose it would greatly depend on soil conditions.

thanks,
Ian

My 20HP MF easily digs 12" hole. More of an issue is what phd can you connect up to a BX.

Just out of curiosity would the examples shown and the OPs tractor work in heavy, wet red clay?...or would you need more PTO HP and a stronger digger?

Thanks...Tom R

The auger in the pics is a 9" and if the ground is wet, I dig about half way down and then raise the auger to clean out the dirt and then drill the rest of the hole. The weight that far back is more of a problem than running the auger, the 2660 should run a 12" with no problem, just the weight of a full auger load of wet dirt on the end of that long pole may be more than the lift will raise, just drill part of the hole and lift it to empty and then drill some more.

It doesnt take much power to run the auger but you have to be careful that it doesnt screw itself into the ground. Hold it up after it goes in about a foot and dont let it freewheel especially in soft wet clay or it will screw itself into the ground and since your PTO doesnt have a reverse, the only way out is to take a pipe wrench and reverse turn the PTO shaft to get it "unscrewed". Having done this a few times, I can tell you first hand that you wont be able to turn the auger if it is in up to the gear box. You will appreciate how much work this is after the first time and be more careful on future digs. It can happen in the blink of the eye if you are running lots of RPM and the dirt is hard on top and then gets soft, when it starts going it will go in before you can stop it. By the way, my first auger in was with a 90 HP tractor and it wouldnt lift the auger out till it was at least halfway out of the ground.
