Country music is dead?

One thought I'll throw out-My first serious introduction to "Country" music was probably the Urban Cowboy soundtrack. Before that, I couldn't stand to hear country/western, and especially Hank Sr. Kind of thought it was as bad as "Opera". Well, that Urban Cowboy introduction led me to an appreciation for any "Country" music, including the older artists, like Ernest Tubbs, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and yes, even Hank Sr!

Today I have a pretty wide range of music styles. Never thought I'd have the 60's and 70's rock on my Ipod, along with Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, and heaven forbid, Country!

Thank goodness for Sirius/XM radio. They've got the older country artists on some channels who you rarely hear on commercial radio because it's not viable.

Hate rap, and still don't care for Opera.

They goof around a lot, obviously part of their show. But they sure can play. Miss Slade. He played nice bass. Rumor has it, when noone was looking he could play one of the finest flattops you could want to hear. Charles Sawtell was excellent, to say the least.

I really did not have a taste for Western Swing, however, Red Knuckles changed all that for me LOL. IMHO, Tim O'Brian is good but not as good as he was with Hot Rize. Is Charles Sawtell still alive? Ken Sweet

I mean, I listen to country music most of the time, but lately it is just annoying. If you compare classics like All my exes live in Texas or Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys or the good old Johny Cash - current country music just plain sucks; wouldn't you agree? There is a lot of whining and nothing catchy in lyrics or melody.

I've been saying this same thing for a few years now, rock is the same way. I believe the problem is that music has just run out, there is nothing left to sing about:D

What I don't like is the "crossroads" or "fusion" with rock acts from the 70's or 80's. I really think that this is done by the record companies. I really don't want to hear a Jon Bon Jovi duet with Toby Keith!!!

:D:D:D Ever see the show with David Bowie and Bing Crosby singing The Little Drummer Boy in a Christmas? YouTube - Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby (HQ Audio)

Now that is fusion. :D

Funny that most TBNers are picking up the changes in music from County to Rock. So much of County is really Pop and there is not much Country. Not sure the Rock really exists anymore. I have never been a fan of Country music. But I own a three CD set of Johnny Cash songs. :D When a young coworker told me that Taylor Swift was country I had a good laugh. Today's Country maybe but she is a Pop Star. I like her music and the last CD I bought was hers. But she ain't country. :D:D:D

The radio show I listen too can fade out when I get near work. At a couple of intersections if I get stopped at a red light I can pick up a TRUE Country music station. If the radio show is on commercials I will inch up a bit and the Country station will come on. :D

I guess I am lucky since we can pick up radio stations with music we like but then we are not too picky. Sometime workings on the tractor my Work Tunes will keep tuned to a Country station. It was not bad at all.

I would have to disagree.

I love Toby Keith and Tim McGraw. Can listen to their songs (and they have a lot) all day.

Nothing wrong with the prior generation of Country singers but their are some good ones in the current crop.

From what I can see, Country Music is doing quite well these days. They seem to be the concerts that are pretty much sold out vs. others.

There is still "good" country. There is a lot that is cross-over though. They definitely have a bigger audience than the cross-over artists of yesteryear.

Someone else mentioened there needs to be another title or two for country these days. That is pretty reasonable idea. A lot of the country out there now does not fit the old definitions, and, there is definitely more variety now.

On the radio, I am opposite; I can not listen to Pop-40 country that much. Both Sacramento radio stations are good, but I think their DJ's should be named Pete, and Repete. I worked delivery with a friend for a while. It was his truck, so it was on his radio station. Dang, some of those songs got old after a couple hours, much less a full day. I really like the one about "Riding with Private Malone". Till they played it again and again and again and again; those DJ's Pete and Repete... I think that is probably true of any Pop-40 station though whether country, pop, rock...

I would have to disagree.

I remember one night long ago The Highwaymen came to Augusta, Maine.

Yup, Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris on one stage for one night.

THAT was a night of country music. Really great.

I still listen to John Hartford, Glen Campbell, Doc Watson, Dave Mallett.

There are some good players on the radio...Brad Paisley, Keith Urban.

I like Phil Vasser.

But honestly, since the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia have died, music just isn't the same. Believe it or not...they covered country tunes from Marty Robbins to Hank and a lot of their own music was influenced by country, bluegrass and jug bands. They did it all and they did it all good (great), I might add.

I told John Hartford that his music reminded me of something old. He replied..."Well, that is about the best compliment I've gotten."

I love John Hartford. He wrote the song...Gentle On My Mind which Glen Campbell made famous.
