I also vote for electric fence and maybe a BB gun if that fails. Ken Sweet

Step 1, Talk to neighbours and say you're getting a bit cheesed off... if that fails....

Step 2, make your intentions clear and have a good laugh with a paint-ball marker. Don't use Clearfill.... and when your neighbours complain about the polkadot goats, say "It's the wife's xmas prezzie.. when her birthday comes around, she's getting a shotgun".

The problem will go away rather fast....

Slingshots, Air Rifles and shotguns will damage/injure/kill the goats, and that's not a good plan. Goats are tough, but a paintball gun will give them a fright without any permanent damage: sounds like the perfect plan to me....

A cheap BB gun would sting 'em. But if they are through the fence and you ping them with a BB were are they going to go? I think eventually they would learn to not go through the fence but it might take awhile.

If the neighbor is not being neighborly about the situation call up your local animal control and see what they will do.

I used to own land in a subdivision. There was a twit who had lots of land in the subdivision. I think he might have sold some of the land to create the subdivision. When we would have a homeowners meeting he would make sure that everyone knew he was a LAWYER. We all got the point that he was a lawyer. And an a...s. :D

The LAWYER had sheep. Deity knows why.

He sorta kinda had the sheep fenced in. Of course you cannot sorta kinda fence in life stock. The sheep would get out of his sorta kinda fence and eat the neighbors landscaping. The neighbors tried to be neighborly with the LAWYER but this did not work. I guess the LAWYER thought everyone was intimidated with the fact he was a LAWYER.

Did I mention the sheep owner was a LAWYER? :D:D:D

Animal Control in my county, and I think it is NC state law, would come and get the loose livestock if my neighbor would catch the sheep. Animal control would then notify the sheep's owner to come get the critter(s). If they did not get the critters Animal Control would get rid of the critter if it was not claimed within a period of time. And during that period of time the owner was hit with a pretty hefty fee for the caring of the animal.

My neighbor caught a couple of sheep eating his shrubs. Animal Control came and got the sheep. A letter was sent to the LAWYER. I guess the LAWYER figured out that intimidation did not work and that oops the law was not on his side. He replaced the sorta kinda fence with a fence that kept the sheep on his land. I assume he got the sheep from Animal Control.

My neighbor did not have anymore sheep problems as far as I know. Though I am sure he still had to deal with the LAWYER. I on the other hand saw that a bunch of nuts lived in the subdivision so I sold my lot so I could move on and save my sanity.:D:laughing::D

Later,
Dan

Years back when I had a close neighbor I went through the same ordeal ... everytime I turned around those darn goats were through the fence and goats like to be up in the world ... they soon fiqured it was nice to lounge on the cab of the pickup....

I gathered them up one day put them in the trailer and took them back ... six of them. I unhooked the trailer and told my neighbor that his goats could live in my trailer until he got the fence repaired well enough to keep them from destroying my wifes high dollar shrubs. I then told him that good fences make good neighbors ... do not allow your goats to visit me again, because they will not be returned.

A couple days later he brought my trailer home ... after he had used it to haul the goats to the sale barn!!!!

Just a practical note about the fencing. My neighbors goats had a 4 foot high welded wire mesh fence. The fence got a little floppy from the goats pushing on it so the goats figured out how to shimmy under it, and then how to climb/jump it. They put up 2 electric strands but unfortunately the installed it in a way that it completely shorted out the wire and was too high to block the goats from going under anyway.

We rearranged the 2 strands of electric wire; put one about a foot from the ground, and a second wire up at the top of the fence to block both escape routes. Made it so the wire did not contact anything except the insulators, and it really cured the problem.

Hope this helps. It can be infuriating when this happens.

Had the same problem with my neighbor, the goats disappeared one at a time. I can only talk and be nice for so long. If you raise goats you should have the correct kind of fencing.

With a truly determined and smart goat, you are always one step behind. Don't ask how I know.

Around here my solution for deer predation of butternut seedlings was to leave a few fish heads around. Coyotes love fish heads and keep coming back in case there are more. No raccoons raided my corn patch this summer, either. I think the coyotes ate them.
