Goat Deterrent - Shotgun, Airgun, Slingshot, ???

Thanks guys. And yea, sorry that I had absolutely NO idea of what to do. Also sorry that I did not mention the fact that we have talked to the neighbors several times to no avail.

At that point you only have to shoot one or two, or make them disappear. Then the neighbor will find his own solution.

Good fences make good neighbors. Make your fence better, repair or upgrade. .

Add electric to the fence. High and low, so they do not go over and they do not go over.

Another option, call animal control. Have them come get them, and take a report of any damage the goats caused in case that info is needed later. If you have talked to the neighbor before, try and recal when and note that(ie this is not something new).

Or, take them to Animal control yourself, if you have a trailer ect.

My parents have 1/2 dozen goats. From what I have seen, if you shoot the goats with a bbgun, they will run, and then just come back. Again. And again. And again...

Don't shoot them with anything. They will come back. And your issue will most likely escalate. Then when Animal Control or the SO comes out, you'll look worse than the goofball that does not keep his animals corraled up.

I'm looking for something to buy my wife this Christmas and she asked for a 'gun' that would deter the neighbor's goats from coming onto our property. She says that she wants something that will 'hurt but not kill.' The goats creep under the fence.

My sheep used to go under my fence until I stretched it REALLY tight--Imade a simple clamp out of some 2x6 and some bolts--hooked it up to a come along and the come along to the tractor, pull everything super tight and secure it. That will keep them in.

I've had zero luck with electric fencing and sheep. Maybe goats are different, I don't know. I took all the electric fence we had around about 3.5 acres and replaced it with 48" livestock fencing. Don't you know that was fun!

Either you and or your neighbor should improve the fence. Shooting the goats, as it's not their fault, should NOT BE AN OPTION.

Completely agree.:thumbsup: Your problem lies with the neighbor. If the neighbor isn't reasonable, then deal with them through the animal control officer. If that doesn't work, people always tend to pull their head out of their rear end when they get a letter written on some law firms letter head.

The goats come to your place because it offers more to eat than does your neighbor's place. If you have tried all the other, non-violent, options recommended, consider raising goats yourself. It appears that your neighbor will provide you with the animals. If he complains that is goats are all gone, simply tell him that if he wants goats you will be happy to sell a few to him, for a reasonable price, of course.

If I remember Ky law correctly, If a animal comes through a line fence onto your property, you have the right to put it in a holding area so that can do no more damage, call the owner, feed it, water it and then charge the owner the fees for food and care when he decides he wants it back. But remember this works both ways and what goes around usually comes around. FWIW, I have had my neighbors calf on my property for as long a 3 months and I never charged him a dime. Ken Sweet

Try sprinkling Black or Cayenne pepper in the areas they like to eat. They should learn real fast. I have used this on my ornamental grass and tomato plants to keep the deer at bay and it seems to work well. The goat will be easier since they are local and more of a repeat customer and probably will not return for dinner.

The law is the same in Oregon. The owner of the animal is responsible for all damages and the care and upkeep of the animal while it is impounded. You don't have to return the animal until the fees are paid, just like a towing company with a car. After a short period of time, you can auction the animal to recover your expenses.

Sometimes a more direct approach will help. I had a neighbor who kept running cows on my property, relying on my fencing along the highway, so I just took down my fencing along the highway. He was hopping mad, but fenced his cattle onto his own land.

This post is exactly right. Shooting or discouraging with noise makers will not work. The only things that will work are a proper fence or removal of the animals.
