Stick or MIG on thick plate???

I believe NR211 is a 60,000 tensile wire while the II 70 Ultra is 70,000.

the lincoln nr-211 is a 58ksi yeild and 70ksi tensile wire. i'd say it's the comparable wire to the esab coreshield 11 - both are classed as e71t-11. esab rates their wire much higher than lincoln for yeild and tensile, though both are rated high enough to exceed the yeild and tensile of a36 and a572gr50 steel, which are the most common grades you will see.

JCC, have you factored in the time and expense to de-bug the hoe when things go wrong?

I'm sure things will go wrong, but isn't that the fun in these projects, making things work?

I can't stress the fact that a big part of this backhoe project for me is the fun of it. I enjoy the design, materials hunt, learning new things like in this thread and the new shop toys I will need to get to do a project like this. I am not going to have my accountant looking over my shoulder making sure there are no cost overruns.

Hey all. I built one the the caddiggers about 10 years ago. I had always mig welded but never arc welded. I bought a lincoln ac/dc stick and used 7018 rod. turned out pretty good. I'm not real steady. I have put that backhoe thru everything and you couldnt, bend the steel if you wanted to. it was overdesigned i think for toughness. Just make sure you have plenty of penetration and you will be fine.

pictures of mine, search arkydog.

Ok, as long as you are taking on this project with your eyes open.

I ordered my new welder with a 4 meter torch hose package, instead of the standard 3 meter. but with 0.8mm wire i had to cut it out between the wire feed rolls every time, because it kinked. Now i use 1mm wire and i have no more problems.

Wire thickness depends on how heavy you weld: Its hard to get a steady wire feed at very slow feed rates. So welding tiny welds on auto bodywork with 1mm wire is not going to work very well, because the wire feed rate is unstable at this speed.
With a long torch hose, you'll benefit from thicker wire because it doesnt kink as quickly, so you can apply more pressure to the feed rolls, so it will push through when you start welding again, after the last bit of wire melted a little to the tip.

Think Spool Gun.

Hi I am a newbe here
I have been using my little Lincoln Weldpak-100 for some repair here and there it seem to work ok for that. Now I try to build myself a dump trailer which require something more heavy duty weld on frame work. I have look into gettting a new Millermatic211 for little over $1300 but there is one used Millermatic passport plus list on Craiglist for 1/2 price for it's new the guy said he hardly use it.
My question is beside it's portable and such a light way. Does that unit really work as well as the millermatic211? any suggestion or advice would be apreciated. thanks

O.k. its called a spool gun ? In Dutch its the same word for O/A, rod and wire torches/guns...
learning every day :)

What you have is not a spool gun, it is a conventional torch handle. Transit is suggesting that you use a spool gun when you need to be a long distance away from the welding unit. The spool gun has the wire spool and drive motor in the handle so the wire is only pushed a couple of inches , it is commonly used for aluminium welding.
