Actually, the old clutch packs were pretty good when they were allowed to use the old lubricant prior to 1974. You can thank the government and tree huggers for that one. The clutch packs can be set up for various degrees of slippage desired. If you presently have a gov-loc, they use clutch packs also.

Maybe this video will enlighten you & diamonpilot.

I wonder why they did not load all three manufacturers to the limit of the lowest GCWR(the Dodge) and test all three trucks.... GM KNEW the outcome of the Ford vs. GM test before making the challenge. Did they ALSO know the outcome of the GM vs. Ram test???? hhhmmmmm....

True, Dodge could be better, but in the last 10 years, past tests have favored GM.

It will be fun to see how the Dodge does. Definately an awesome truck. I always wondered if you could get the Aisin tranny with a 3500 pickup. I thought it was just the cab & chassis. If you could, it would probably put more power to the ground than the "standard" Dodge tranny.

I think the whole pont being missed in this thread is that of course each truck has its' weaknesses, but GM upped the ante by offering their Duramax diesel and premium allison transmission in their off road truck, while Ford & Dodge are gassers with basic transmissions.

I know gas makes for a lighter off road racer, but the DMAX is pretty light and it gives you a much better over the road truck for the towing enthusiast or work truck owner.

This truck's not even out yet .

Really? I guess I only imagined driving my buddy's new truck a couple of weeks ago:laughing:

It was the best 1/2 ton I've driven so far but I'm sure if I took the Ford Badges off and replaced them with "Dodge" it would have been even better!

No, it would have to have a "Bow Tie" on front. Just ask Builder.

You can not be serious.:laughing::laughing:

All this proves is the truck with a G80 locker can get up a hill a truck with a open or limited slip diff can not. Big surprise.:D

Lets see what happens if you are stuck and spin a trucks wheels with a G80 locker. Once it hits 25 mph it disengages and now is a open diff. Worthless. Of course they did not show this because GM is pouring the Kool Aid in this video. Why did they use a F-150 in the comparison? Because they did not have a locker the year these test were done. The following year the Ford had a REAL LOCKER that was electric and is fully driver controlled, not automatic disengaging at 25 mph like the G80. By the way, Nissan had a REAL LOCKER, a Detroit housed in Dana 44 axles with 33 spline axles, as far back as 2004.

This video did put a nice spin on things, no pun intended. Nice marketing aid for GM but the educated buyer will know better.

You seem to forget I had a G80 locker equipped truck and now all about them. They are better than no locker but come no where near the capabilities of a REAL LOCKER like a Detroit or ARB the competition is using.

Go back to '07 big guy. Look at what was offered ford with 10.5" & clutch packs vs GM 11.5" and locker. That's the last time I bought a new truck.

Tell us why one would pick a smaller ford clutch pack rear over a larger GM locker.

Maybe it's the blue oval stamped on the casting.....

Besides the GM truck of this topic does have electronic lockers....

I bought a new truck about the same time, 2006. I did look at all that. I liked the Dmax engine but really did not care for the looks, interior, lighter frame, torsion bar front suspension, smaller brakes, and a few other items. The GM had the Allison and the G80 going for it. I looked at the total package and needed something with a heavier GVWR than GM offered with its 9,900# package so I bought the best overall truck, the F-350. You viewed it another way and the fight has gone on since. I can not convince you the Ford is better and there is no way you could convince me the GM was better. I had been there done that in 2004.

Now this new 2011 Dmax is a whole other beast. Its a real competitor to the Ford for once and is much more truck than its predecessor. Its got a much better frame, better brakes, and a few other refinements. I still would not own one for the simple fact it has the torsion bar front end and other reasons.

Glad they did put a electric locker in it. I have owned both and a G80 is a joke compared to the Detroit style electric locker. Yes, its better than not having one, but its not even in the same class as a air or electric locker.

What do you guys have against the torsion bar suspension? I have the 04 GM Dmax and am still crazy about it. I drove my buddy's 06 F 350 the other day and you couldn't give me that thing because of how it steers and handles.. mine drives like a Caddy compared to it. And what's the advantage of having to push a button over a diff-lock that works automatically after a rotation and a half? I don't make a study of this stuff but sure like the way mine's performing like new at 130K miles. The gov bailing out the union's pensions is the only thing I don't like about it.
