building a arch gate

well finally got to work on my gates today. seemed the hard part was not drilling the holes but actually trying to get a radius on the flat bar. Well my fix was not use it at all. A few pics as we all like pics.

I will add a cap with a larger bar on the longer square tube and will look at adding a short bar to the top of the shorter side.

Looks good and your fix is right, imho. That arched bar was not necessary for strength.

I'd end the vertical bars under the arch (I'm lazy), unless your matching up to an existing fence/gate and need to be "aesthetically consistent". Another thought is to get the consistent arch between both sides, you'll need a form - consider making a form that also serves as the drilling template.

I am not going to bother with an actual arch on it. I would like to find some spear heads or whatever they are called to well or attach to the top, then the arch will more visible and I think the gate look more finished.
I am hoping to find something that will just slip on top

I purchased my spear points from the guys that make burglar bars. They are round or square, and plastic or metal.

Did you use solid or hollow tubing?

Why drill any holes at all? That's the hardest part of the project, it seems
to me.

Each vertical round bar can be cut into 3 segments, aligned, then welded.
Tacked first, each section would be easy to redo.

Seems like this guy called it right from the get go. Am I wrong?

I am going to build a gate like this. Being the top arch flat iron is going to be a different length the one below it, I am trying to picture how to simply drill all the holes first then slide the round bar down through them and weld it up. The top holes would be on an angle but maybe just drilling them straight and reaming them after might be ok. Aligning those holes is much easier on paper then in real life I'm thinking

Make the curved part in two pieces, creating a curved slot into which the vertical bars go and then you have no holes to drill. Weld the uprights to each curved piece.

no i drilled the holes slid the bars in clapped everything then welded it. I just removed the arched flat bar on the top portion, I could not figure how to bend the radius the same on both and also to make it smooth. Its not like you can really see a 3/16 flat bar from the road anyway. The bars are still cut to length to make an arch, I am happy with the look but it needs the spear heads to really define it I think.
I will work on a nice latching system and hinges which I might look at doing something with bearings, but it really does not matter as we most likely will have this place on the market soon

Seems to me, that once you had the arch made, align it with the spokes, and drill the arch, with the drill aligned with the spokes, and tack it on the bottom of the arch.
