The correct answer will depend on what kind of fitting it is, NPT, JIC, ORB...can you post a picture?

Tapered pipe threads require sealant. My choice is and will be teflon tape. It needs to be applied properly to be safe and effective. It is not for those who don't understand how to apply it, or how to remove it from a disassembled connection where it has been used. Oring boss, face seal, and flare style fittings such as JIC and others require no sealant.

There will be posts here for a week debating the use of teflon tape. I will not be participating.

OK, I won't Either:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

BUT, a PTFE paste is also good for and recommended for hydraulics, and you can't get it at Home Cheapot.

I used Vibra-TITE and to date not one NPT fitting is leaking. Basically a high pressure type of lock tite. Sets up fairly quickly too.

Here is a link from a thread a while ago

..........
>only use it on tapered threads

>don't cover the front/top of the threads

>Teflon need to be properly stretched

>wind the Teflon tape on, by turning the male threads the way you screw it into the female....make sense??

....discussion about teflon tapes "be or not to be", will always upset a lot of minds and will continue be "never ending story"....great product if used with care and common sense..

thanks for the replies, I will research how to apply the tape and clean the connection before trying again

You should also be aware of the purpose of the tapered thread. It was not designed to be used many many times. Things like over tightening and galled threads, may never get a leak free connection. You may have to get a new tapered thread end on the hose, and or a new QD.

We use Loctite PST 592 for industrial applications. For fittings that move 80,000 pounds plus. Loctite PST was designed to still seal a fitting if an assembler just hand tightened and forgot to tighten it with a wrench. A hydraulic leak from this kind of pressure will cut human limbs off.
