hay wagon floor build

I just recently purchased this running gear from northertool Northern Industrial Utility Trailer — 2200-Lb. Capacity, Model# 03813 | Farm Utility Trailers | Northern Tool + Equipment and need to build a bed for it (about 4' by 8') . I was just wondering what was the best way to build it was, lay 2 4x4's for the base and build off of that or?? any advise would be appreciated,

2 -4 x 4 beams 8 ft long with 2 x 6 or 2 x8 4 ft long running across. Then put a 1 x4 down each side. Ken Sweet

Laying flat with maybe a 1/4-1/2 inch spacing between for water and dirt to fall through. Ken Sweet

We haul tobacco, Rocks, hay and all farm products on wagon flats built this way. Ken Sweet

the only reason that I questioned the strength is because I saw these pictures from another thread that looks a lot more complicated, and didn't know if there were any big advantages to that slightly more complicated design.

We used to build them that way about 15-20 years ago. Personal preference, I guess? Ken Sweet

That is the same running gear that I bought years ago. I used a 9 foot long 2X6 for the runners on mine, then laid 54 inch 2X4 stretchers across them and 5/4 decking for a floor.

I've seen the floor boards laid vertical and horizontal, is it only personal preference or is one way stronger than the other?

There was a tab standing up with a hole drilled in it, welded to each corner just a few inches away from each tire. I had to use a 2X6 on edge to get enough height for the floor to clear the tires.

Your question about which way to run the floor boards, I guess it would be mostly personal preference with this size of wagon. I ran mine front to back but most of the hayracks I remember as a kid the floor ran side to side. They let more of the hay chaff fall through the cracks making the floor not as slick to walk on.

Just don't do what one of my Uncles did. Nice new wagon bed and 2 coats of white enamel. Like trying to stack hay on ice skates. Took several seasons to wear it down enough to get a toe hold.

If I was going to paint a wagon floor, I would mix white sand in the paint. Ken Sweet

We build our wagons only attaching two corners diagonal from each other. For example the right front and left rear. This allows them to flex more in ditches and ruts without snapping. I have also seen wagons roped, chained or cabled loosely the the corners that aren't attached. Good luck
