I move my trailers around with my loader bucket. Using the front of the tractor you can turn on a dime with superior control. I welded a receiver to the top of my bucket and made a ball mount with an 18" drop. In the case of your fiver a straight bar would probably work.

Yes I am thinking about modifying a skid steer quick attach plate with the class 3 trailer hitch receiver for the small trailer and adding a 2 1/2" pipe on the top for the 5er pin. The original pic shows channel with pipe welded in it, the channel I suppose was to spread the loading area but I am not sure that it is required as the pipe against the trailers hitch plate should be enough. The pin goes inside the pipe the edge of the pipe when raised butts into the skid plate on the trailers tongue. Being who I am I will probably make both, lol.

Some great pics I really enjoy the sharing of ideas here, thanks.

Here are pics of mine with my GN.

Hi clee4020: That is one robust hitch!. I bet you subscribe to the phrase " Go big or go home!":D. That is the way I think too.

You need to put a latch on it. Yes, in all likelyhood the pin weight would keep it there, but what happens if it doesnt? Or when you stop or accelerate with the angle right and it rides out? Best case, you drop it on the landing gear, worst case, you have a runaway trailer. Or, it jumps out of the pipe and the overhang lands on your head.

Go buy a cheap 5th wheel head, should be less than a couple hundred, then attach it to your 3ph frame. Probably find used for less.

Biggest problem will be that the pin on many 5th wheels is far enough under the overhang that you will have trouble getting the tractor back under it far enough and still be able to sit in the seat.

Also, a common misunderstanding is coming up here.

A gooseneck is NOT a 5th wheel.

A gooseneck uses a ball and coupler just like a bumper pull trailer.

A 5th wheel uses a pin that is captured in a jaw and has a plate the trailer weight rides on. It is very similar to a semi hitch.

Drives me nuts when shopping for a truck. They list them as ready for a 5th wheel because it has a gooseneck ball in it. NOT the same thing.

I would definitely subscribe to a proper receiver for going cross town but I am just shunting it from it's winter storage to a pad in the sun, lol,200 to 400'. I would hook it to the truck if going on a trip. Two different RV places are using the pipe deal to shunt trailers around their yard. Just lift and go on the three point hitch. I have looked at some used 5er receivers anywhere from $150 to $1000 but would take to much space on the frame.

Your trailer and your head. But give some thought to what will happen when it does pop out of there. Because, it will. Just ask Murphy. Do you really want to play chicken with ~10,000 lbs behind you and above you basically unsecured?

Seems foolish to me to take something as heavy and expensive as a 5th wheel and cobble together something insecure by design to save $100. The actual head on my hitch is less than a foot in any direction, not counting the handle. Space isn't an issue. But, like I said, your trailer and safety. Just hope it actually stops when it does pop out of there instead of running over someone.

If you could put a notch in the pipe where the groove from the 5er pin lines up and then make a pin from a piece of flat bar. That should lock it in place. My GN hitch is the square kind that uses a pin to lock into the narrow part of the ball. See attached crude drawing. Good luck, Matt

I have little experience with 3pt hitches. The old equipment we have doesnt have them. But I have towed extremely heavy loads mostly in offroad conditions over stumps, swamp and mud. My question is, on good solid, fairly level ground, how much concern should I have for a loaded trailer to push the 3pt up into the back of the tractor should you come to a stop a little quick or the load jerks behind the tractor?. What is out there to keep this from happening.
