Do you really pay 7% property tax? That's $7000 per $100,000 of true value. Also it would be illegal here to tax nonresidents at a higher rate than residents.

In our area the right to attend a public school is based entirely on where you reside, not on land ownership.

I have noticed that people tend to spend money in relation to how much they make. And as an example, my parents both worked before any of us children came along and they said they never felt like they had money. Now my dad works off and on as a self employed carpenter and with 9 people in the house we probably live better. There are times we feel it but since we are together as a family most of the time , we can work though it, and everyone contributes.

Since my mom stayed home, she home schooled, cooked food from our large garden (which we were able to grow because she stayed home),and was able to discipline us when we needed it,(me especially:D).

We saved money on gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for an extra car. We also saved because ,as I mentioned before, she cooked all our meals until us kids could cook. The other thing is the garden that we had, that mom and us kids did most of which saved on food costs.

Because of all this we were able to live comfortably on a surprisingly low income and have never used any money from the government in any form (that I can think of).

You have a hard and important decision before you but I believe that this stage in a child is when it is most important to spend time with them and to build the relationship.
You will never be able to relive this time in their life again.

I am not a father but I hate to see kids that spend more time with "babysitting" type organizations than with their own parents and I think this effects the relationship with their parents later.

Take care and good luck

No they assess the property at some low number then you pay 7% on that. I own 130 acres of whick about 115 are timbered and the rest is old field and scrub trash inbetween. There is also my grandparents house that is not lived in by anyone, i stay in it when i go there. It is livable, outdated yes but habitable, and is only 1400 feet or so. They value the property at something like $48k on the books. The house and one acre at at like 7% and the land is taxed something like $1 acre agriculture land. so yes and no.

And as far as anyone saying that they dont live in that district so all their money even though they may pay the resident tax is spent in a different county i say bull. They both work in this other district according to him and live in a rural area, they come to this area to work, mostlikely buying gas there and groceries on their way home, as well as need to visit the area to go to any large retail outlet, just a guess though. When i lived in the district near me we spent everything but our utilities and rent in another county as well as school district so that did not help the local economy where we lived, thats the way it is in small areas.

OK i pulled the bill. the total market value is $38,616 and then its multiplied by 4/6 to get some numbers then below there is a millage rate. blah blah. Way to complicated for me to figure out, its not a straight 7% of that $38K though, somewhere its multiplied by 7%?? Its pretty tough to decipher, but at the tax office i had some things changed and they told me i was "taxed higher b/c i was absent landowner".

The system for educating our children is broken. School choice is simply never going to happen. If you are paying taxes in the town you live in then your school district must provide your children with an appropriate education even if they have to bus them a hundred miles to do it. Federal block grants and all.

If there is a legitimate educational reason, and that is a very elastic definition, why your children need to attend the other school the district you are in will be required to send them there.

Absent that and your left with moving, paying the bill or breaking the law.

It shouldn't be this way, you should be able to direct your tax dollars where ever you want. But such is life.

I feel you pain. We are building a new house to in the district we want to send our kids to school in.

Good luck!

I would be pissed at that, you don't use most of the services that the county provides, yet they charge you even more? Could that even be allowed?

That's the way it is here in GA. Can only qualify for the Homestead Exemption on your primary residence.

Yep i was going to say that but you really beat me to it, the homestead exemption is left blank on this tax bill, for the reason i stated above.

I will have to dig up my "home" tax bill im sure Greenwood county has it as well, im sure the whole state is set up with the homestead exemption thing.

Hows is owning a property in a district and using it as your primary residnence fraud? You pay taxes on that trailer just the same as if an Illegal bought it and sent 5 kids to school from that address. You both are paying taxes at the primary rate(you would have to say it was a residence so when they check you show in the tax assessor as living there). And heck if your an out of towner you are paying at a higher rate. I know i get taxed at like 7% on my rural farm property where id only pay 5% if i was full time there.

Because it is not your primary residence. Calling it your primary residence does not make it your primary residence. You don't live there. You're using it as a sham. People that run for public office try this tactic often because they do not live in the district where they are running for office. Public servants try it, too, in order to get a job with a municipality that has residency requirements. When they are caught, they get kicked out of office and they lose their job with the municipality. It is dishonest on the most basic level.
