If your tractor is not bouncing and grizzling trying to pull a load all over the place I would imagine it should be fine. We pull quite a lot with an old 45 Hp tractor. If the tractor can pull it, it should be fine on the machine. In most cases it will lose traction before its possible to hurt the tractor itself while pulling. I have a small HST, new, and havent tried it for pulling just yet. But these things are normally used for dragging plows and subsoilers in the ground, so that would be really hard to pull, but they are designed to pull or just lose traction. It shouldnt hurt the tractor. But I'm no expert, many people might know something different they can add. But I know if your using a subsoiler deep in the ground there is a continuous load on the tractor. As long as the engine isnt lugging or clutch slipping it should be perfectly fine. I would imagine the HST will pull fine until the relief lifts, then you know. Otherwise it should pull away without damaging the tractor. At most the hydraulics could get hot, but im no expert on it. I see what your asking. I would pull as much as the tractor can pull without losing ability to control, steer, or continuously losing traction, or lugging the engine. Otherwise, load her up.

As others pointed out, sounds like you are in high range with the HST and you should be in low range. I think that is a difference in kubota vs. JD - 3 ranges vs. 2 ranges. I have a kubota and never use the high range except for highway use (and even then, not going up a hill!).

Thanks for the replies. I only run in low range. One thing I liked on the Kubota was the 3 speed transmission. The 2 speed on the Deere Just doesn't go low enough.
I talked with a rep and he said that tractor has relief valves all over it. Helps to protect me from myself I guess. With loaded AG's and rear chains he said "that's a lot of grip". So, I ask, are relief valves adjustable? Can I tweak them??? I've never messed with hydraulics.

My 4010 pulls fine in low range. Have had the relief go sometimes in high range. It has also relieved in running the bush hog.

I don't know about JD but I bumped up the pressure on my loader by tightening up the relief valve. I have not seen or heard anyone playing with the relief valve for the HST tranny... wouldn't mind finding out.

One thing to remember is that you want to check the pressure before and after and not "over do it"... relief valve is there for a reason. To me... it sounds like you might have something out of whack... you should have been able to pull that load.

They might be, but that would be a job for the dealer tech, not a DIY as it could cause expensive issues. I wouldn't doubt that they were inside the transmission where some pulling apart of things was needed. It could be $$.

Something is not right here. Your relief valves should not prevent you from spinning your wheels on dirt. Dry pavement, yes, but on any non-paved surface, a tractor the size of your machine should lose traction - ag tires, chains, ballast and all - before it goes into relief and refuses to turn a wheel.

Another poster mentioned the HST pedal isn't like the gas pedal in a car... you feather it less to gain pulling power, not more. If you floor it, you will cause just what you're experiencing... less "gear reduction" and less pulling power. Has that been an issue here?

2 transmission ranges are less convenient than 3, but that shouldn't stop you dead in your tracks like that.

Has tractor been like this since you took delivery?

Agreed.

On my farm, two ranges would NOT be adequate for the tasks I ask the tractor to do. I have a LOT of respect for my 3710 and it is a very capable machine, but one need understand the operation of the HST in order to use it properly.

Lower and Slower is ALWAYS better in context of torque, control and safety.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. This one has me concerned -

"a tractor the size of your machine should lose traction - ag tires, chains, ballast and all - before it goes into relief and refuses to turn a wheel."

This is definately not the case. This situation has existed since I took delivery. Time for a Pow-wow.

I have a JD 3038e and have pulled 12" diameter 50' long hardwood [sweet gum, oak, ash] with the TPH lifting log 6" off of ground, without a problem on level to light slope ground.
