Has anyone bought a FNAR 308 rifle ? looking for feedback

I've never been into the semi auto thing. I always believed in one shot one kill, and as such I use smoke poles and bolt actions. I've found that all the Savage rifles I've owned have been tack drivers right out of the box. It has never taken me more that 6 shots to get Quarter sized groups at 200 yards.

Westclif,
The AR-10 is also available with green furniture.

The M1A has synthetic stocks. If Springfield does not sell them on a model the aftermarket has them available.

My semi-autos only shoot one shot at a time. Hee-hee.

Seriously, it sure seems like bolt actions are more accurate in general. I'm just such a lousy shot with everything its hard to tell.

I believe in the principal of one shot, one kill; I just like having the availability of a quick follow-up shot (or 19 or 29 quick follow-up shots).

There's been a lot of .308s brought up in this thread that I didn't even know existed. Looks like most are out of my price range, but they are still nice to look at (like a lot of women I know).

ToadHill, I don't have any sentimental attachment to bolt action rifles. I have never owned one. Once you start putting together a good bolt action with synthetic stock and a few options, there is not a whole lot of price difference anymore. A second follow up shot is certainly quicker and it is more general purpose than a simple hunting rifle. In 308 the bullet has a long enough kill radius that one has to consider carefully whether to take the shot, but has enough stability and mass to make it through some brush, unlike the 223. I don't see myself owning a whole bunch of rifles which was why I didn't simply want a rapid fire rifle with crap accuracy either, like one of the AK knockoffs. It seemed some of the other tactical semi autos did not have a stellar reputation for accuracy unless you spent a lot of money on aftermarket add ons.

I went through this same decision process in 2008. I chose a DPMS LR-308B. It is very well built, very reilable, very much more accurate than I am but also very heavy. With scope and magazine it is 13 - 14 pounds. I like it and the weight does not bother me. Most people are shocked when they hold it.

The Browning BAR

Was my second choice.

The Benelli R1

Was my third choice

The FNAR had just come out and I did not research it well. At the time I thought it was too expensive at over 50% more than the other options. Obama's election sure has changed that.

If it had been available I would have considered a Remington R-25
r-25-prod.ashx

It is much lighter than my DPMS with many DPMS parts.

The Remi R25 is a DPMS, exactly..not just parts..it's all DPMS with a remi paintjob and box.

Have you looked at the Springfield M1A aka the semi auto M14?

+1

I don't know what the Armed forces are now issuing "with more punch" (other than the .50 BMGs) , but back in the 80's we still had them.

Don't really need a scope unless you have bad eyes or really want to try to push it.

If you are on a budget, how about a Remington 7400?
semi auto 308 . I have one, it is not in the DPMS class but it is an ok rifle..it has killed a few deer for me.

Since I will shortly be permitted to own a firearm again after a 10 years abstinence, I was wanting to get a semi auto 308 for a reasonable price and without the super aggressive styling. The FNAR seems to retail for around $1300, promises minute of angle accuracy and it looks like it won't need a bunch of accessories out the box. I would prefer something other than black, but it seems that would be a custom paint job at this time.

I like the SCAR 17, but they are scarce and expensive and I may just want to wait to see how that pans out longer term. The folding stock also complicates things in many states. I also like the FAL's but they are more expensive for an older design. I don't know how the FNAR is for field stripping.

If anyone has one, I would like to hear real world experience with the FNAR.

If you don't mind my asking, why were prohibited from owing a firearm for ten years? The 308 caliber was utilized by the military in sniper rifles. Shots have been made exceeding 1,000 yards with this caliber weapon by military snipers. A twenty round magazine in a weapon chambered for 308 would give an individual a lot of very deadly fire power.

That caught my eye too??
Musta been a very good reason for that:confused2:
Why now the need for a high powered 308 rifle and a semi auto at that?

Do You care to elaborate Westcliff?
