Did anyone look at a Kubota MX5100HST and choose Deere instead?

Wow, I haven't driven either yet because of all the snow we have, but I didn't realize Kubota put the brake pedals on the same side.
I'm still going to try them both, but I think the choice just got easier.

I don't see that as a general safety issue. As you said it is only a safety issue for you because that is what you are used to. For someone who is used to JD it would be a safety concern if the brakes were on the right. If you were a tractor designer working with a clean sheet and not looking at what is out there now, what would be a reason to put the brakes in a position that requires you to cross your leg over to use them?

Note, I clearly stated my reasons and made no claims JD were unsafe.

For the record, I don't cross over to use my brakes and from what I understand people only do this for steering, not general use.

Just curious why, if brakes on the left are "better/safer" why John Deere has them on the right on their gear tractors with the clutch on the right. How many cars or trucks have brakes on the left.

What "makes sense" to one doesn't make sense to all. If there was one "right way", they would all be built the same way. That is why I recommend anyone looking to buy a new tractor to look at all makes to see which one fits them best.

Is it your contention that Kubota designers and owners are just too stupid to know any better?

I am done; these "discussions" never end well.

Sorry if I offended. I make no contentions about anybody or say one is better than another. Just looking for a clean sheet design answer for turn brakes being on the same side as HST pedals on an HST tractor.

You would like the JD x55 series HST tractors. While having turn brakes on the left side, they also have a single common brake pedal on the right side above the HST pedals.

ok i just gotta ask,who in the world uses their brakes to turn a tractor.personally ive never used the brakes to turn in my 35yrs of driving a tractor off an on.as for the treadle pedel of the kubota youll love it.i dont even think using the tradel pedel is second nature to me.but 1 last thing to think about is JD doesnt make a hst in a 52hp tractor.an nor will their tractor lift what the MX5100HST will pre the salesmen.this info is not off the cuff as i was talking to the JD dealer as i was finalizing the deal on the kubota.

On my old 2WD Ford, one of the things I do is drag an indoor horse riding arena with it.
I always brake to turn in there because the turns are tight and the front will just push in the sand if I don't.
I've never tried it with a 4WD, so perhaps I wouldn't need to with that.

well doing what your doing you would use the foot pedal an rpms to control the speed of your turns.an if your in doubt get both dealers to bring the tractors out an you use them to dragg your area.an then make your choice.im not trying to sway you either way.just telling you what works for me.

Sorry I'm in the middle of this. Again I'm not trying to say any thing or any brand is better than another. I just asked an engineering design question. If the answer is the designer did not want to make changes when introducing the HST versions, I'm OK with that. Guess we'll never know the answer so I am done.

As for turn brakes, I have not needed them in the dirt or grass. Different story in the snow and ice. I remember being amazed the first time I stepped on a turn brake while plowing snow and the plow was overrriding where I had the steering wheel turned . The tractor immediately turned where I wanted, not where the plow wanted.

I had a Kubota L3940 previously and honestly never used the brakes unless I was parking on a slope. On my L3940 there was also a cruise control lever on the left side it could be used to speed up or slow down the tractor just like the foot pedal. So if you need the split brakes you could use the cruise control lever instead of the foot pedal and just use your right foot to work the split brakes.

I leave my brakes split on my Kubota and use the cruise or swing a leg over if I need them. Honestly it steers so sharp I've only used them a handful of times (in 700 hours) when really stuck when slid off a driveway in snow.

The single pedal was weird when I first got it, I love it now. I can't stand the 2 pedal designs now. Reversing with a snowblower is much easier to push your weight down on that foot to turn around and still have good fine speed control.

I have a 5100 HST and its great, not sure about the JD tractors but the 5100 HST has great adjustable cruise control and 3 speed HST. I like the foot petal its great for loading work and i never use the brake pedals, but I do have two feet so i cant see why it would be an issue. My father in-law has a JD 955 HST that's older 90's and I cant stand the cruise control mowing really sucks. I liked the m series over the l series since it felt more like a real tractor and has bigger tires. good luck
