I think some of you hose guys are taking this hose repair against a new hose a little to far. We all know about liability, and most of us use common sense about things especially about safety. Of course you have the right to refuse service if it might jeopardize a persons safety, and rightly so.

You should also know that there are more hose users than hoses makers out there, and when they want a hose repaired, you probably do it. Selling the customer a new hose is not a guarantee that the hose will not burst and damage someone. How many of you push a new hose assemble on a customer, using safety as a scare tactic. I think most people would buy a new hose if you told them if using the old hose, that they might die. In that situation, you could sell them just about anything.

Just refuse service to a bunch of people that need their equipment up and running 8 hrs a day, and you might be out of business after a while, because they are going to get a hose repaired or purchase a new one, but not from you.

I don't blame anyone for protecting themselves, against liability.

Do any of you pass out a liability statement to your customers?

What so you guys do with all the hose that is over 10 years old or has exceeded the shelf life? Do you sell it to other shops or somebody like Surplus Hydraulics?

Be safe out there, and use common sense.

Just curious...

Do all the (holier than thou) hose makers have their "certified hose maker" credentials hanging on the walls of their shops...or does that type of thing require an advanced college degree?

...And do all of the employees that crimp hoses in the shop also have certificates or advanced degrees?

I love how these guys that don't deal with hoses and hydraulics for a living know more about them than us that do. Nicely put Rick.

No, Wayne you probably forgot more than I know but, real situations out there does not totally warrant everything brand new. If I was you dealing with the general public coming in, I would respond much of what you are saying.

I learned something new today, didn't know that fittings were designed to mate with specific hoses. I always thought that 1/2" hose was 1/2" hose and a 1/2" fitting fits 1/2" hose.

I am one of those dreaded " hose makers ". My credentials are my reputation with my customers , and that $$$ insurance policy , that I purchase and have never used . I try to work with my customers and will do what I can to get them working but , you have to see the other side . I don't want someone injured or dead , over me skimping or making a buck . If I have a doubt I will tell you politely your choices , new hose or go somewhere else , and '' sorry , good luck , come back '', all with a :):)

You guys are missing the point. It is US that makes the call to crimp a new fitting on a used hose. It's my liability insurance, my livelihood and my conscious if somebody gets hurt. I have crimped new fittings onto used hose a ton of times. I make the determination. I can't tell you how many times the customer has ruined a new hose and I made him a new hose, no charge. So we aren't out to always sell a new hose no matter what.
Yes Larry, I do know more about hose and fittings than you. Don't know why you feel the need to throw in comments like that.

Didn't want to enter into the cross fire......But here's the answer to you question........

Yes, the Certified Hose Maker credentials are hanging on the walls

No, not a college degree but rather a costly seminar and test procedure

No, not all employees....just one that can take the blame when the legal judgement comes knocking at the door to bankrupt him........this Certification is not required yet but some manufacturers may in the future for their legal protection......

Personally, I always use new hose if one burst, but to have a business tell me what I must do or not do is not going to happen.

No business is telling you what you can or cannot do. However, if you want that business to repair a hose for you, then that business has every right to decide whether or not they want to join you in doing it.

There are arguments to be made on both sides here, but if you think "liability" is just an excuse we make up to sell you a more expensive product, then you've probably never had to buy liability insurance for a business like hydraulic hose repair.

Our general manager here at DHH happens to be a volunteer fire marshall. He's a little more safety conscious than most, and he is my "go to" guy on quy on issues like this. If a customer insists on doing something we feel is unsafe, believe me, we do NOT worry about losing that business.
