AZTim, I think I have found the way I am going to go for 308.

Original Metric FAL Kits

Kit to your door looks like this:
DSC00180-1.jpg

Sarco has bought container loads of what were apparently new unissued FAL rifles from Argentina. They were demilled by sawing through the receiver. So when one buys the kit for $550, one adds a new receiver from Coonan for another $300 and then has to fit at least an additional 5 US made parts (receiver and ejector count for 2). Typically most people replace small internal parts like the hammer, sear, spring, gas piston, recoil spring etc. Many people also use US made furniture like a wood stock below.

The FAL Files Forums - Show me your Argentine FAL

I will be doing one with a camo paint job and no muzze device (target crown only). Anything but a black rifle....

For anyone who has been following this thread, I bought a savage 24 combination rifle almost exactly 1 month ago and the BATF has still not cleared my background check. He keeps being told every week to hold the rifle for another week until they get back to him. My poor local FFL is losing money on that deal for sure ($30 transfer fee). At least I compensated by taking his $100 CCW training and paying him to fit the scope...

Tim, it is great to hear from someone who actually owns the rifle. Having seen combat myself, reliability was high enough on my list that I used to clean and lube my service rifle daily (we did have very dusty conditions). If you have ever experienced a failure to feed while under fire, your attitude towards taking down your rifle may experience a change... Unfortunately, that take down issue is a deal breaker for me.

I just bought a second rifle, a DPMS carbine in 7.62x39 (AK47 round) which should be cheap to shoot and capable (and legal) to use for hunting in MI. For whatever reason, DPMS has discontinued the upper in the 7.62x39 caliber and the Sig I would have liked has some legal issues in MI. Price was good too @$825 including 2 30 round magazines. I will add a couple of 5 round mags as well as several 20 round mags. I don't fancy the long "banana" mags myself unless there are a lot of bad guys trying to kill me... in which case I probably have other concerns... I had to jump on it while I had the chance..

Its like the pic below, except that it has a muzzle brake.

If the takedown is your only gripe about it I think you are selling yourself short on one of the most accurate sub $2000 guns I have ever shot

Sadly, I was informed on returning home Friday evening after a week in California for work, that my permit/background check for both rifles was denied. I was given some documentation on how to appeal, so supposedly within about a week of filing I should know on what grounds it was denied.

Since my only interaction in 7 years with law enforcement was a civil infraction when I slid into the back of a truck in a snowstorm, there should not be grounds for denial, but apparently there are often mistakes made entering data, not all supplied data entered into the search etc etc. Looks like the average turnaround time is close to 150 days, so if I am lucky I might get through this in time for hunting season....

In researching the topic, it seems important that I file a VAF (Voluntary appeal file) since it authorizes the FBI to retain pertinent information discovered while processing the appeal, which would otherwise be purged after a short while and one could in future have more denials for the same reason.

Wish me luck...

I do, hope you don't need it though. It's probably due to all the Govt. databases being linked now under the guise of Homeland Security.

The young guy that works for me just spent 8 grand on lawyers so they wouldn't deport him back to Poland. He's been living here for 20 years and had a legit green card for the past 10. They stopped him and his wife and 5 year old daughter coming back from a trip abroad. Shackled his legs and cuffed him in front of his daughter. All because Homeland security's computer didn't like something. 6 months and 8 thousand dollars to clear things up.

+1

That or it could be due to the fact that someone didn't want to take an extra 10 minutes out of their work schedule because they were given something that they didn't know about and it was easier to deny it than actually find out what they needed to do.

[FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]So to close out this post, I received a final response from the FBI while I was away on vacation last week. My appeal was submitted 03/08/2011 and the final letter was on 04/11/2011, so just more than 1 month later.

The wording of the reply goes as follows:

"The FBI criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) divisions NICS Section Appeal Services Team (AST) has processed your application and has made a determination regarding the status of your application. Based on a descriptive data search, no matching records were found to be identical to the information you submitted. Therefore, we have been able to verify that you are eligible to be placed in the VAF (emphasis in the original text).

Please be advised, entry in the VAF will not automatically result in a proceed response on subsequent firearm purchases. A complete NICS check will be required on each transaction and may result in a denied status, if prohibitive information is discovered.

You have been issued a UPIN which will identify you as a person who has been entered into the VAF and who is non identical to specific potentially matching records. Keep this original letter in a secure location. You will need to provide your assigned UPIN to the Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) for each subsequent firearms transaction. "

So I guess this week should see the completion of the transfer of my Savage 24 which I purchased on 01/26/2011..... This month should also see a decision regarding my CCW application, which had been waiting on the local "board" to meet at the beginning of April. Yet another 3 month process, just like I was told by the clerk at the courthouse when I filed my application.... Once I get the CCW permit, I can finally start the search for a suitable handgun.

If I was still living in my country of birth, I could still be waiting, defenseless, a year or 2 from now, possibly forever.

Well good luck.

I didn't understand most of that letter to you, but in general it's much more diffecult to get a hand gun permit than to buy a long gun. At least it used to be, alot has changed since 9/11.

If a firearms transfer is denied, you can do 1 of 2 things:

1 - File an appeal. Can take up to 6 months to process. If everything is straightened out (your info does not match that of records with similar information which could be confused with you), you then are allowed the transfer. 1 month later, the file on record with the FBI is supposedly deleted/shredded. So the next time you want to buy a weapon, you potentially have the exact same problem again and have to file another appeal.

2- You request being placed on a "Voluntary Appeal File" (VAF). Process is the same as above, except that you are authorizing the FBI to retain your information indefinitely (until you choose to have it deleted). If your record is proven to be clear, you are assigned the UPIN identification number which you include in the FFL transfer application. This clearly identifies you and sets you apart from other people with similar names who may have felonies. Hopefully, purchasing weapons becomes a simpler faster process.

Thats it.
