Ignoring safety warnings and bypassing safety devices

A " well hung" guy would've triggered that stock located switch no problem
As I stated "(manly equipment related comments not required.)"

Besides, why would you hang me just because I fixed my seat?
:) (kid friendly forum) :)

I don't think that the parts needed for breeding are the ones getting damaged by their stupidity, so simply removing the warnings wouldn't help.

Besides, then the rest of us wouldn't have "stupid warnings" to laugh at and act as fodder for forums like this.

The breeding parts are kinda useless without a working support system ,ain't they :p

Saftey seat switch = riding lawn mowers Oh ya!. grand pa took a spill were riding lawn mower flipped over and rolled onto him.

it could have been worse.

saftey seat switch on tractors. were you can set the engine speed and let it run without having a foot or hand on it. is a very big plus.

i have done it twice. on both tractors. not realizing that i still had it in gear. and just about to stand up then realize i still had it in gear. for the OLD CA i caught it real quick, as the tractor tried to take off. but the 555C. i stood up and almost got out of the door. before i double checked myself. and each time i was headed for rear of tractor or under it. to hook something up or do something.

on another note: if the tractor flips/rolls over. the wheels can keep on spinning, blades still spinning. having tractor shut down completely. could make it from life vs death.

though. how many times, have i gotten off of a tractor. to hook something up. or toss a couple things on it / in a bucket. to many to count. and having to restart it back up each time would drive me insane.

on other hand. if i am going to walk away from tractor. and the tractor will no longer be in my direct control. it will get shut down. exception being letting it warm up in winter. and letting it cool down in summer. though i generally stand by near a window or door were i can see the tractor.

never had to experience PTO shutting off when you went into reverse. but if it did, i would most likely be turning that thing off more so for mowing around here. there are enough spots here on the farm. that mowing in reverse cuts time down considerably. though if i had say a generator, on the PTO it might be a different story.

shaft shields for PTO. if i had them i would most likely use them. i have gotten my sleeve caught once with a drill bit, and a couple times with screws that i was using a drill to put them in with. the sleeve was a shocking experience. no harm, but it took my attention quick. the screws. no biggy. i knew there was a good chance the gloves would catch. and i was prepared if they did catch.

i generally try to keep cloths, jackets, etc... pretty well tight and not dangling or loose. but like anything, i might be doing something, then double check things, and realizing a button came undone.

there are times when getting off of tractor while it is running with PTO engaged is needed. say PTO water pump hooked up to a weed killer tank. and using a hand gun to work back into an area.

if there is a mower attached and hooked up. it gets shut down regardless. pending on machine, if i know the machine, i might not shut down tractor completely. but if i don't know machine or see the slightess spin of a pulley or PTO spin even when disengaged then tractor does get shut down as well.

speaking of mower decks. the old allis CA. has a belly mower. the shields that go over the outer pulleys and belt. i attempted to keep them on. but due to i run living daylights out of the deck. the vibrations alone have sheered good quailty bolts. and when shields are on. i can not see if a given pully is spinning or not. and if not, most likely something is jammed up underneath keeping the given blade/pully from spinning.

=====================
my number 1 thing though, is when working with tractors and or backing up a trailer. is if there is someone around. i will get on there case, and i do mean down right tell them to get the BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK away. to a point it makes them feel bad and want to leave. if i feel it needs to get to that point. and sometimes will just go right off on them to back away. and go stand over there. until i say it is safe to move and not to walk away form that spot till i say they can. even if they want to leave the area completely. i am a complete total a** about above.

if others are working around the machine. they best have direct eye contact with me. and that i can at least see mid chest and up on them. if not i will shut things down. and go off on them even more to stand away.

and at very min, go through a couple hand signs with them. more so. so hands off controls and on all brakes. before someone comes near the machine. stop commands, left, right, down, up. shouting doesn't do squat. can't hear / make out what there saying 3/4 the time.

if ya been on a tractor enough. and been bad situations to begin with. tractors do slide, things can jerk around without a hesitation notice.

How many out there, like me, don't follow all the safety rules?

I don't believe that I am reckless, and I don't do things just to stick it to the man, but I do think that some safety devices/practices/rules are not for me. I consider the risk, and in some cases come to the conclusion that I am smart enough and mature enough to handle the risks. There's a good chance of me getting injured while on a leisurely motorcycle ride but I keep on riding.

I think that a lot of safety devices/rules/warnings are there because someone was dumb. I figure that I'm not the type of guy to toast an english muffin while taking a bubble bath, so the six warning labels in three languages on everything that plugs in annoys me.

I don't think the things I do are dumb. I pay attention. I am careful. I think about where I am, what I'm doing, and what's going on around me. There's no beer consumed until after the day's work is done and the machine is parked in the garage. I think some people need to be protected from themselves, but I don't believe that I am one of them.

Am I alone? Does anybody else feel and act this way? Do some like to think that they follow all the rules all the time, but sneak an infraction every now and then when no one is looking and not admit to it?

I'm not saying that I am right or saying that safety is silly, I'm just saying what I do. I'm not asking permission, and not trying to convince anyone to engage in what might be considered foolish behavior.

Things I've done (and in most cases probably will continue to do) and my justification for not following the warnings:

I don't use the chains that come with PTO shaft safety covers. They just seem to come loose, flail around, and eat the paint off of things.

I have bypassed the seat switch on my tractor. Trying to do the Houdini quick flip between the drivers seat and the backhoe seat without having to restart the machine is a pain in the posterior.

I've been known to step off the tractor while the MMM blades are still spinning. Only on the non discharge side, and only when the deck is lowered so it won't kick something at me and I can't get a toe under there.

I have no reservations welding on my ROPS. I've done a fair amount of welding and have yet to see a length of box tube fail because I welded on it. I don't think that welding on a few brackets to mount lights will alter the performance of the ROPS. I think the manufacturer will advise against it because it makes their life easier if they need to litigate in a lawsuit involving a rollover accident.

I take my toddler for rides around the yard on the tractor. Low throttle, no blades spinning or implements engaged, just a slow tour of the perimeter of the property. She sits on my left leg and I don't need my left foot or left hand to operate the machine. Throttle, brakes, and hydrostatic controls are all on the right side, so my left arm is dedicated to holding her on my lap.

I also occasionally swim just minutes after eating a sandwich, sit very close to the television, and read in poorly lit rooms.

I do always put the toilet seat back down. I'm no dummy.

And go.

As a personal protection equipment and standard, company provides safety label sticked in equipment.

Avoiding safety you might not be 100% free from danger. It doesn't happen every day, It happen once in a blue moon.

I am also avoiding safety rules but up to some extent, not that much that you might have to face danger sometimes.

I'm a redneck, I admit it. If anyone tells me where to sit, my neck turns red.

If I do something against the advice of a sticker, I feel alive! Screw you, sticker! Ah....the adrenaline flows!

I make it a point to stand one step above the ladder sticker warning.

I'll never wear a stupid-looking bicycle helmet. Somehow I lived through my youth without ever having worn one.

I never hold the handrails when going up or down stairs.

Sometimes my hand goes below the warning line when feeding my chipper shredder.

I've been known to use a hammer or drill a hole without wearing safety glasses.

I've been out in the sun without any sunscreen.

I've actually had a couple of drinks after taking some Excedrin.

When I was young, I smoked cigarettes, and I don't regret it.

I jump off my tractor all the time with it still running.

I used to drag race on deserted streets when I was a teenager.

I don't wear a helmet when I drive my ATV, never will.

I've refilled the gas tank on my lawnmower many times while the engine was still hot.

I've talked on my cell phone while pumping gas.

At the gas station, I've gotten back into my vehicle while the gas was still pumping because it was too cold to stay outside and watch it.

I've removed the positive cable from a car battery before I removed the negative terminal.

I've had rubber band fights with no eye protection.

I've left bottles of booze within the reach of teenagers.

I store my eggs in the refrigerator door instead of deep on the bottom shelf.

I've fixed or replaced wall switches and outlets with the wires still hot.

I pull power cords out of the wall by the cord all the time.

I've ducked under trees in lightening storms.

I cook food in the oven all the time without preheating.

Honestly, I don't know how I've lived so long....

i hope i havent posted this before, if i have forgive me. long time ago i needed to make a part. so i clamped a piece if steel in the vice, and got the torch out and started cutting. after i cut some, i looked down and i saw a gas can, i had been blowing hot steel on it. i found something to sit on and calmed down. move the gas can, went back to cutting.

I'd like to put an insurance policy on you (me being the beneficiary, of course) as it's obvious that you ain't long for this world...

Oh give it up :p

IMO there's only 4 things that keep you alive in this world.

# 1 is Health,You can't really control it and depends on # 2

# 2 is luck, this is what you have if you make a grave error or get badly ill and you live trough it or did not get badly hurt.

# 3 is the abillity to learn from a mistake, that is if # 2 didn't run out the first time around.:p

# 4 is common sense, this is what you're supposed to develop when # 3 is present.

BTW at some point in time # 1 and/or # 2 will run out eventually, different for everybody but depends greatly on # 3 and 4

Ok, this is the one I don't get.
"I do always put the toilet seat back down. I'm no dummy."
Were I the one who always sat I'd really rather see a clue that the stander had raised the seat..

Well, I'll scare the **** out of some of you.
When I need to sand my iced up driveway I lock the steering with a bungee cord, Shift my CUT into lowest gearing, get out and walk besides it and shovel and fling sand as I walk alongside.
I do sand ahead of where I walk as I once slipped and had to chase the tractor.
My injector pump has a lever for manual shut off and I have a trailing cord that I can pull to stop the engine.
Mind you I only perform this trick on flat areas and not hills as I could just see the CUT entering my living room unannounced.
Don't think my wife would like that!
