I was told any truck over 26K - CDL, Any trailer over 10K - CDL,
Air brakes -CDL, More than 11 gallons of fuel being transported - CDL, etc.

I only know that I don't want to be a truck driver.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. There was a small time excavator that would put the bucket over the back of the dump box and raise the front wheels of his backhoe about a foot off the ground and take off down the road. No trailer required. Seems crazy now.
Hah! 10-4 on that- I have not seen it done but I'm told one of the old timers in town did that same thing. Of course, if you look at what those TLB's were in the old days, they weren't much heavier than my JD 3320. Fords with Sherman backhoes, International 350's with Pippin back hoes etc.

I'd like to see someone hang a 410 Deere today!

Are you hauling the backhoe for personal use or commercially?

Well, you were told wrong on these three.

Not sure about other states-BUT in MA: If trailer is over 10,000 lbs and GVWR of combination exceeds 26,000, you need a CDL-and a class A (1) at that. If GVWR is over 26,000 but trailer is UNDER 10,000, a Class B (2) is all that is needed. That says if you are dumb enough to pull a 10,000 lb plated trailer with a 150, you are okay as the GVWR of a 150 does not exceed 26,000 lbs.

Now I have a 10,000 plated skid steer trailer that I have pulled with my son's 150 and with my Ztrak on board. If I put my 3320 with Loader, 550 lb weight block etc. I pull it with my B61X or I borrow someones HD pickup-and I don't go near an Interstate.

Also, in any case, will a 450 or 550 pull a JD 410? Yes. Would I want to pull that 410 with a new 550 or a 30 year old Mack with a 23,000 lb rear and a 12,000 lb front? I'll take the old Mack any day. Nothing like being in control of your load vs the load being in control of you!

That is the case in all states.

Now I am getting confused again:confused2::confused2: I think I will take the dog for a ride and look for someone to move my machine.

A new Ford F-350/F-450 and the new 2011 Dmax 3500 both have tow ratings north of 24,000#.
An F-450 may be rated at 24,400lbs but NO 1-ton truck is rated "north of 24,000". The Ford F-350 is rated at 22,600 lbs max, GM 3500 is 21,600 lbs max and RAM 3500 is 22,700 lbs max.

As for towing the backhoe, I agree with a class 6 or 7 dump truck but it probably could be done with a new 1-ton truck if you have $50k+ sitting around. A decent 20k tandem axle goose-neck trailer will weigh around 5-6k lbs leaving you with just enough for a 15k lb tractor but when you take into consideration the amount of "tongue" weight on the truck, you still have a decent buffer of capacity on the trailer.

The only place I see 1-ton trucks pulling full-sized TLB's is in television ads. It may be within the weight ratings of some trucks, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Pulling and stopping are two different things.
