How much vehicle to tow Deere 410C Backhoe

Local guy uses an old F-450 like yours to tow his stuff around using a pintle float hooked to a frame plate type hitch. Works fine for him. They are rated for something like 26,000 lb combined weight and the truck weighs about 6000-7000 lb.

Another local guy has an older F-450 with a roll off deck and he hauls up to about 8 ton on the deck but he did shear the pinion off trying to get moving in soft ground once.

Old trucks like that don't always have GCVWR's, some had recommended max tow ratings and axle weight ratings. Here, as long as you obey your axle weight ratings for truck and trailer, and have the appropriate registration weights paid up, they could care less if you are doing 10 mph up grades or cut driveshafts off when you try to accelerate fast.

You need to look at the Gross Combined Weight Rating of your trucks. The GCWR is the total weight of truck, trailer and load. It is the legal max. Get into an accident when you're over that max and the lawyers will take you to the cleaners as you're overloaded. Go very far over and then you're into gross negligence with matching penalties $$$$$.

Then look at the weight of a trailer that carry the 410C. Add it all up with a bit extra for tools, attachments and "stuff". That will determine how much truck you'll need.

If the goose neck trailer is over 10K you need a CDL to pull it. You can do anything you want, until something happens or you get a spot check. Then you will wish you had all of your ducks in a row.

Bottom line is this: anything you buy that can legally carry your backhoe WILL require a CDL license to drive and that equipment WILL require an annual DOT safety inspection. New, old, pintle, gooseneck or 5th wheel it doesn't matter.

If you buy a 30 year old Mack (or whatever), you had better be prepared to wrench on it to keep it in compliance.

Forgot to mention the weight sticker you can see on Roy's truck door--45--which puts it in the 45000 lb GWR class. CDL required.

Not here. Depends how its used. Put farm plates on it and stay within 150 miles of your property and you can have a semi if you want.

He did not say if it was for hire, he just simply asked what was needed to move it.

Nobody said he was a farmer, or was going to fraudulently claim farm use, as many do. Hire/not for hire is a non-issue. If it is going to jobsites (clearly stated, I might add), it is a commercial use unless he can convince a cop that a 1982 Mack pulling a trailer with a Case backhoe on it is actually an RV.
