1 tons have come a long ways in the last 20 years, or even the last 10 years. The drum brakes have given way discs, given way to big discs. The discs on a new F350 dwarf the ones on my 2001 F350, and are bigger than those on the old F-superduties.
Re: electric brakes when towing big, you shouldn't be towing big with a junk controller. The decent controllers monitor the braking circuit and alert you them being unplugged, bad ground, bad wiring, etc at which point you pull over and fix the problem or limp to a garage. You wouldn't run with a broken air valve, or leaky or broken air lines on your semi so why should you run bad controler and wiring on an electric brake rig.
