Gas cans

I just went to a hose store and bought about 2 feet of the same hose they use and replaced the setup normally there.

sw03, I don't mind the no-spill ones when they work, but the majority of those around here require too much pressure to pop open the safety spout, and the nozzle breaks. Additionally, it's rare that I can get all 5 gallons into my machine at one shot, so I have to pull the spout out, and it springs back and splashes me, every single time.

They all look about like these, more or less. You have to apply too much pressure, on the ones I've messed with, to get the spout to press back enough. I always make a mess. Maybe I'm just too dumb.

I really like the no-spill CARB cans that have the side handle to hold them while the spout is in the gas tank, then push the spring-loaded plunger to open and let the gas or diesel flow.
Can be seen at
Bailey's - Fuel Cans & Fuel Additives > No Spill

I can also buy them at a local Kubota / New Holland / Stihl dealer close by.
In my opinion, they are the best for not spilling and for easy of getting the fuel in the tank.

beenthere, I live in California, home of CARB, obviously, and haven't seen those. If they work as they ought to, they will be superior to anything else for these purposes. I am going to search for them, and, if all else fails, just buy the spout from Bailey's as you linked to put onto the jugs I've broken spouts on. Thanks!

I have had the same experience with the cans with the no-spill spout.

I wish you luck on the spouts fitting onto a different jug. That has been my biggest complaint over the last 30 years of fuel "jugs" that a good spout cannot be interchanged with a spout gone bad. I've a lot of older jugs that sit on the shelf because of lousy spouts.
Only one caution with these ventless jugs/cans. Release the pressure that may have built up (cold fuel warming up and expanding) before tipping up to let fuel flow. Saves getting a splatter of fuel under pressure.

I can send some measurements if that would help to decide on the spout. I caused a failure in the tightening ring by closing it too tight, and don't close them so tight now. The small jug is perfect for chainsaw fuel, and the 5 gal I like for diesel and a red one for lawn tractor/wood splitter use.

Our LS business has some of these and some of the push-spout style. The push-to-start (Eco brand) ones I usually just remove the spout and pour into a funnel. The CARB-approved ones work really well because you don't have to balance the spout on the edge of the opening to open or close it. However, they pour pretty slow. My 4240 always gets filled with a big funnel and no spout on the fuel jug--the "beep beep beepbeepbeep" indicator works most excellent to prevent any over-filling.

Most gas and fuel cans sold today do not have a vent hole and have spring loaded nozzle spouts. (I guess for safety reasons). Blitz is a common brand. I've filled them, put the nozzle on and had them tip over in back of the truck and never lose a drop. They are OK but can be a hassle if you have to support the 5 gallon jug while filling a tank. It will fill slowly then stop and suck air back through the nozzle so the next half gallon can flow into the tank.

I fill my 5 gallon cans at the gas station (red cans for gas, yellow for diesel, Clear or blue for kerosene). In my area you must use these type safety cans, If I show up with something else they won't let me fill them.

Once home I pour the diesel into a 15 gallon white (opaque) container using a funnel. That container sits on a 4 wheel dolly I can roll over to the tractor and fill the fuel tank using a universal 12V electric fuel pump that runs off a 12V trailer battery.

You can always opt for a fuel caddy but I think they are expensive. Northern tool has several but the ones with a hand cranked pump are $400 and up. Of course the gravity feed ones must be higher than what you are filling.
Why go through all this when all you have to do is use the pump to empty the cans into the 15 gallon container?
A fuel caddy is just for transfering fuel and makes for a poor expensive stotorage container.

I'm going to try the No-Spill brand 5 gallon diesel jug.
The 90 degree setup would work much better than the 45 degree plunger style on my 2520.

Any suggestions on really good gas and diesel cans? I want them (of course) not to spill fuel, last a long time and pour fuel easily.

Doc

I use something like this

$37.95
Pretty expensive considering I bought 12 of these

for at total cost of $36. for the 12.
