Check into this a little more.

I know for sure that if a CA resident purchases an auto in tax free OR, and the keeps and uses it in OR for 6 months, he can then bring it into CA tax free.

The big deal is you have to show use, gas receipts or something like that. A bill from a storage yard will not do.

I have no idea what it's like now, but when we were full time RVers, we used a mail forwarding service in Texas. But a lot of full time RVers used Oregon mailing address (mail forwarding service) because they could buy their RV in Oregon and not pay sales tax. We bought a new motorhome in Las Vegas, and of course, knew that we'd be paying the Texas sales tax when we registered it. So for aboutr $4,800 I can understand those who used Oregon.

A pertinent question for many of us: If I (in PA- or any state) buy a tractor from Barlow's, and have it shipped, does he collect a tax? Which one?

On the same token- when you transfer a vehicle in same family, even from husband to wife for a dollar, tax needs to be paid, even though you already paid taxes on it before for full value here in NYS.

IIRC in NY you are exempt from tax on a car that was sold (or given as a gift) from parent to child and (I think) from husband to wife.
Grandparent to Grandchild is not exempt though.

Just to clarify. I live in New York state. If I buy something in Pennsylvania, I pay the Pennsylvania sales tax ( I do it all the time.) For example clothes tools. Why would a tractor be any different? I am not trying to avoid paying sales tax. I am trying to avoid paying the extra 2.75% that NY charges. When I went to California a few years back, I paid California state sales tax for the stuff I bought. Since I am not registering the excavator, like you would for a car why would I not just pay the PA tax? To take it a step further, it would be well worth my while to physically go to a tax free state to buy a Tractor, and have it shipped. I will call my accountant today, and see what he says. He lives in PA, and I am pretty sure he charges me PA tax for his services.

From what I understand...NYS will want the difference in sales tax. So if you pay 2.75% less in another state, NY will want that difference!

Here is one for you. I live in NY and get my Cat parts at Milton Cat in VT. This is not mail order, this is me at their parts counter. When I pay my bill, still at their store in VT, my NYS sales tax is already included in the bill.

The way the news has been reporting about New York's pursuit of revenue, that is sound advise.

Don't know if half of what we hear is fact on the news, but it sounds like NY wants all they can get.

Here in Maryland many people purchase their high cost items in Delaware where there is no sales tax. This doesn't work for cars as they are taxed when you register them. But people buying in Delaware made one of our ex-govenors so mad he threatened to put state police at border crossings and stop those they though guility of tax evasion. he never did and I still cross the border to buy.

I dunno how you guys do it ! :confused2:

I know my state gets their money one way or another, but I must be spoiled living in a state with no sales tax. I can't imagine paying hundreds (or thousands) above the cost of a tractor, excavator, etc, above and beyond the cost of the machine itself. Heck, that would be my new bush hog or box blade !!

Here in NH, our gummit passed legislation prohibiting another state from collecting taxes from any business here in NH selling to residents from elsewhere after Massachusetts went after a NH tire store for not collecting 'use tax' from Massachusetts residents.

How's your property tax, high.?? I would bet.

As states become more desperate for money they will probably step up enforcement to greater and greater degrees. Just wait until the tax man shows up at the garage sales and demands the sales tax on all items sold.

Different states have different laws on out of state purchases. Some states share purchase information, some do not. Most state income tax forms have an area to report any untaxed purchases. In my area, if an out of state dealer of a product has a store in my state, they are required to collect my state tax (and reimburse my state). If I take delivery of the product in that state, I pay taxes in that state and would be required to pay any additional taxes if the item is to be used in my home state (or something like that). If the product is purchased out of state, delivered to me in my home state and the dealer does not have a store in my home state, I am not required to pay taxes at that time...but legally I am still required to report the purchase on my state income tax form. Oddly enough my state and an adjoining state do not share such tax information.
