I used to know a guy who came to the US from Nigeria (Africa) when he was about 19. He had NEVER seen temperatures below the 60s, and that was the dead of winter at night. :) Well, he came to the US in January and he arrived in the city where his brother lived... which just happened to be Detroit, Michigan. His brother had warned him that it was cold, so he wore the warmest clothes he owned. That is, he wore a cardigan sweater that buttoned up the front. His brother met him in the airport terminal and offered to let him use his coat -- it was 10 degrees and snowing -- but he assured his brother that he would be fine. They had to go outside to get to his brother's car They had some trouble finding it, so it took a while. He told me that he literally thought he was going to die. :D

The TS has 2 components; the diesel bowl that feeds the TS plug; the TS plug that opperates via a valve that drips diesel onto an electric heating coil that ignites the desil.

You may see black smoke & even flames coming out of the exaust. This helps in colder temps to start along with the compression release and a block heater if you have it.

The block heater helps warm the engine oil but draws lots of power; 400W (?); it takes a couple of hours for the block heater to warm the block; the most efficient way to use them is on a timmer system; so If you want the engine to be warm at 7am; set the timer for 5 am. The manual recommends a B Heater under 32F (0C).

My Thermal Valve had the electrical wires knoked off so it wasnt opperationa when I got it; this is typical, also the electric heating coil is knowen to burn out....

.... my 2 cents of summary understanding. Cheers a BC D

I am glad I have the thermostart and I use it I also have a 400w block heater also which is the best imho and only about an hour is necessary @ 20 F.

A lot of these little diesels dont have a soft plug or a way to install one I got lucky and had a soft plug where it was handy to put one in.

I personally think glow plugs may have been a better solution arguably but it is what it is the solution Yanmar gave us.
