Just to spice up the debate, is there added service cost on a HST over a gear drive? Just curious my 3240 is gear and I have never owned a Hst, and if so and factoring it in would some of these 9's be 8.2's.........hmmm

yes there is added service cost with an hst.just to change the hydro fluid in my hst its gonna cost me $250 for hydro fluid.full 50hr service will cost me $385 an thats with me doing the work.a gear tractor hydro oil is never changed.you add hydro fluid if you have any leaks.

Let me answer this way: maintenance is not a cost, it is part of ownership.

My house costs way more than a tent to maintain, but I'm not going to trade it in for a tent just to avoid paying higher maintenace cost.

I have a 16 year old Cub Cadet with HST with about 1200 hrs. Like the ability to infinitely vary speed when mowing the pasture as grass length can vary a lot. Have never had any repairs and it still works very good. I just got a new Kubota BX and the HST has been working flawlessly although I've only got about 10 hrs on it so far. I'd give HST a 9.5 out of 10. Had a gear unit before the Cub and it worked fine as well but the infinite speed adjustment is something I'll never give up now.

My TC40DA HST is a 2005 with 400 hours, give it an 8 out of 10 after buying the Boomer 8N CVT because of the HST whine. CVT is a 10/10, very quiet and easy to drive, one gas pedal and one brake pedal just like a car, shuttle shift on the column, selector switch for low/medium/high range, and very responsive.

Half of the time (when box blading) I don't give my lack of HST a second thought, the rest time I wish I had it. I guess I was just trying to justify my HST deprived life.:laughing:

DK45 SE HST. The biggest advantage I can see is that I am free to concentrate on the job I'm doing without having to think about shifting and proper gearing.

I ride motorcycles and drive both manual and automatic transmission cars. When I am in my car for work I want to think about my work, not my car, so I take the automatic. Same applies with the tractor I guess.

what do you mean gear oil is never changed. of course it is changed. i changed my geared tractors hydraulic oil every other year (aprox every 200 hrs) They also have hydraulic filters that needed changing. i think my hst only uses 2 quarts more fluid than the gear version, so its a non issue in overall cost savings for me.

HST most definitely!! When working close to crumbling edge of a banking that split second of delay for the shuttle shift to engage could be the split second that puts you over the edge.
