Rest in Peace
We use to do residential shingle roofs long ago when we were 16-20 years old, 2-3 guys, hand nailing, carrying bundles up ladders. We were proud of ourselves if we did a roof in a week, made good money too. Now roofing is so competitive they come in with 8-10 guys with every time saving tool, shingles delivered right on top of the roof, and do an entire roof in a day or 2 including rip off.
The first time I roofed a house (about 50 years ago), I carried the shingles up the ladder 2 bundles at a time. The last time I roofed one (about 22 years ago), carrying those shingles up a ladder one bundle at a time was tough. The roofing contractor I'm working with roofed 2 houses in one day within a block of my house. But of course they had a big crew. I think every house in this neighborhood, except mine, has the old standard 20 year, 3 tab shingles. We have the 30 year timberline shingles and since the house, breezeway/patio and shop are all under one roof, it's a lot of roof to cover for a little house. The adjuster that recommended only doing half of it figured 40 squares.
