Gun Rack???

   / Gun Rack??? #41
I bought a cheap 17hmr that I carry with me while walking my property or riding the quad. The gun was around $130 nickel plated.... Very light to carry and compact!!! I will have to figure out a way to strap it to the tractor also!!!

i've used a rifle scabard before.. but don't see whay a gun rack ont he rops with u-bolts wouldn't work as long as you secure the gun with a bunji and perhaps put a bit of tape on the muzzle to keep dirt and bugs like dirtdaubers out and plugging the bbl.

OK, slight hijack...

So last weekend I went down to the land to clean up the last of the trees we dropped this winter (been a very wet spring so not many good times to get out there yet). Neighbor I know is mowing and motors over to say "BTW, there is a large black bear in the neighborhood that was in another neighbor's garage and in my back yard in the past week or two, so watch out." Well, oooookaaaaayy. Never saw him all weekend but then chainsaw and tractor noise would probably scare away most wildlife.

So this got me thinking that a gun may be a wise thing to carry as I am often out there alone. Mind you, other than BB guns as a kid, I have handled a gun like once in my life (unloaded at a friends house years back). I asked some guys at work and it was suggested a 12ga shot gun would probably be the right thing for me here. Obviously whatever we are talking about I need some training so I have a clue what I am doing. So I'm looking for suggestions for something that will give someone with my experience level a good chance of stopping a bear if the situation warrants it. Based on what is around here, I am not likely to run across anything else that is a real problem. Almost no poisonous snakes (the very edge of rattle snake limits or beyond). No wild boar that I know of. Some coyotes, but they are small. No wolves this far south that I know of. Very few Bengal Tigers, Dragons, or African Lions :) I think I can take the squirrels and turkeys in hand-to-hand :)

So what say you knowledgeable folks? And to keep it on topic, I will be mounting it on my tractor, for sure!

There is no way I would ever shoot at a bear with a shotgun unless it had a slug in the chamber, a regular shot shell is just going to make one angry bear!! With all of my encounters with bears, they all ran from me, although my buddy usually gets treed by one every archery season, last year his dad had to drive the truck to his tree and blow the horn and yell to get it to leave his tree.....

Well yeah they were talking about slugs and not bird shot or something.... One guy said the guides on an Alaska trip had the first shot as bird shot/buck shot (dunno) to scare them, and then slugs after that if the bears were not being cooperative and running away like they should. But that's the kind of thing I am looking for as I know near-zero on guns.

Yeah you should be fine with that setup, you might want to look into a semi-auto. If you are not that familiar with them it might be you best choice once the safety is off you just keep pulling the trigger. I have seen people hunting with pumps that have ejected the shells without firing in a semi-panic.... Another option would be a 44mag with the same scenario, bird shot in the 1st chamber and regular bullets in the rest..... You also might want to take a Hunters Education Course where they teach you the basics of handling a firearm... Good luck on your quest!!!!

Wow Bears! never thought about them as a threat. We don't have many down in South Louisiana and what we do have, are highly protected. (along with cougars) . If you want to stay out of jail and keep your money you better leave both those animals alone.

I guess what firearm you need to carry on your tractor and how you carry it depends a great deal on what part of the country you are in !!

Below are the penalities

Cougars located in Louisiana are protected under state and federal law and penalties for killing one may include up to one year in jail along with a possible $100,000 fine.
Black Bears carry with them a maximum fine of $950 along with the possibility of imprisonment of no more than 120 days.
Because the black bear is recognized as the official state animal of Louisiana, the killing of this animal will also involve civil restitution to the state of Louisiana of at least $10,000.
The black bear is categorized as a species of special concern.

I don't think I would want to push my luck here in PA either with them.. Although there has been some bad bears running around lately.... It would be a flip of a coin wether they would fine you or not and you better have a dang good reason!!!!
