Gun Rack???

Wow Bears! never thought about them as a threat. We don't have many down in South Louisiana and what we do have, are highly protected. (along with cougars) . If you want to stay out of jail and keep your money you better leave both those animals alone.

I guess what firearm you need to carry on your tractor and how you carry it depends a great deal on what part of the country you are in !!

Below are the penalities

Cougars located in Louisiana are protected under state and federal law and penalties for killing one may include up to one year in jail along with a possible $100,000 fine.
Black Bears carry with them a maximum fine of $950 along with the possibility of imprisonment of no more than 120 days.
Because the black bear is recognized as the official state animal of Louisiana, the killing of this animal will also involve civil restitution to the state of Louisiana of at least $10,000.
The black bear is categorized as a species of special concern.

I would imagine if you are shooting it to protect yourself you should be ok.

If all you have is a handgun, don't use it.

Depends on the type of bear, the caliber of handgun and skill of the man carrying it.
Black bears can, and have, been taken down with .357 Magnum revolvers. The recommended bullet is hardcast lead for best penetration.
Brown bears (grizzlies) are a different story...bigger the gun, the better. The Ruger Alaskan (.454 Casull) is made for those who may face grizzlies. Admittedly, even a big revolver like the Alaskan is to be a backup to a rifle or shotgun.

But, when in peril, you've got to use what you got... Heck...maybe I'll piss that bear off enough to lose his appetite.

seems like the anemic .25acp would do it. just a shot or 2 to the eys into the brain.

'course you got to have good aim :)

but yeah.. when in peril.. use what ya got...

I've been around guns all my life. Dad & Uncle were a professional big game hunters & guides. I am a believer that Bigger is Better, but don't under rate small caliber guns. A 22 Long rifle will kill almost anything you will come across in the USA. Most of the time a Winchester 30/30 or a 25/35 were the guns carried hunting. In the 50's Clell (My Dad) killed a good sized bear with a 9MM, P38 that my uncle brought back at the end of WWII. Summer before we killed 1 with the 25/35. When guiding duds in South America the only guns allowed were shot guns.

First picture is me & a bear. Next 2 are a short story about my dad. Next from a hunt in Mexico.

With most wild animals in Louisiana you would probably be correct.

However, when it comes to the black bear in Louisiana, our Wild life and fisheries and our court systems have taken a very stern line. You better make sure you have no escape route. Moreover, even if you do convince a criminal court judge you were acting in self defense you stand little or no chance of avoiding the civil court judgement.

We have some very powerful black bear conservation groups in this state.
That minimum $10,000 louisiana civil restoration fee is real .

that's why I choose to live in a free state where our lives have value. In florida we have very specific and strong self defense laws. Victoms are protected ( by law) from civil penalties arising from a self defense shooting.

I'm sorry.. I like bears and critters as much as the next guy.. heck.. I'm a farmer.. but.. my life is worth more than theirs.

if I'm under attack and it me or them.. it's gonna be me... any judge or politician that wants to think otherwise won't get my vote, and would likely get an impeachment or vote out campaign against them very quickly.

If you like living inthe south and don't want to be a subject in a communist state anymore.. come on over to florida where your life means something and you have the right to defend it.

my 2 cents on the armament, I think you would be well served with the shotgun, 12 guage and either slugs or 00 buckshot.. I also think a pump or semi-auto will do. and for a tractor gun, I would go with pump. for several reasons.
1: price. pump guns are usually cheaper than semi-autos
2: a tractor gun is going to collect grime, a pump is a little more forgiving of
dirt, and assorted filth.
3: more reliable overall especially with mixed loads of lower powered shells, and higher power ones.

I would keep it chamber empty on the tractor, with internal striker/hammer down, so it would not need to be "unlocked" to jack a shell in the chamber really quick, but be safe. Now what the other gentleman said about pump guns has happened, about jacking all the shells out of a gun, and never firing it once. But if you practice with the gun, (and you must) you will do what you practice. Now I have and love semi-auto guns, including shotguns. but I have pump guns too, and they are my prime self-defense guns. Now don't get mad about what I said about reliability and all, my semi-auto Remington or your Benelli, are extremely reliable guns, but I have seen semi-auto shotguns choke on lower powered loads, and the clearance drill is not what you want to learn when "ole smokey" is fixing to chew on you. We all know gas-ports get dirty, and gas regulators might be set the wrong way. (yes yes I know Benelli's dont have any) but still for a knock-about gun, I would go with a pump gun like an Remington 870 or Winchester 1300 or Mossberg 500 or something even older, but still in sound shape. Well that was more like 50 cents than 2 cents, but there you go.

There are some in Louisiana that would disagree with me but I think our state has come a long way in the last 4 years under our current Republican govenor. You just can not correct all the bad politics that went on for many years in 4 years. I am certain they are a few laws and regualtions that you do not care for in the State of Florida.
I am convinced that we are sort of on the right track as a state, we have a long way to go but I guess I am the eternal optimist.

Don't get me wrong, if I truely felt a life was in danger whether it was mine my children are a total stranger I don't think I would hestitate to pull the trigger no matter what animal was on the other end of the barrel.
I do value a human life more than any critter's life.

Packing iron for snakes, bears, and other hostiles, was that an AK47? You all are killing me,. Statistically more of us will do harm to family or ourselves with our own guns then any animal could hope to accomplish. Additionally there are a large percentage of us who routinely jump on the tractor and DON'T buckle-up apparently because we ain't skeered, except of course of small snakes and rogue black-bears. If it came to a scrap I would bet on my CUT FL or BH vs. any critter walking or crawling.
We carry because we can, bless the second amendment; I find it disheartening we often feel the need to justify our rights due to snakes and such.
Commentary Over - Back to the original posters question. I found this online last week and will be using it to secure my pistol on all my vehicles. It is a quick release base for a Serpa holster allowing you to safely secure any handgun to any surface. Holster can be moved from vehicle to vehicle in a few seconds.
