Holy smokes guys, I never expected this much of a response. Thanks for all the input!

I am on my mobile phone only for the next day or so, so will try to answer more later but to hit on a couple things.

No electricity between me and the neighbor and any hard-wired option would need to go under a road which isn't really an option.

When I use my aircard elsewhere it works great. At home I get one or no bars and it is terrible.

Before we got DSL, one of my neighbors, whose house is 220 feet from ours, was paying for DirectTV Internet. ON a good day, I could see the wireless network he was using as an available one on my laptop, but I never tried to connect to it.

As I interpret your post, trying to get internet from a neighbor with their knowledge and permission is not illegal, but if I tried to get internet from my neighbor without his knowledge, would that be illegal?

My wife sometimes takes a laptop to her folks house, and is often able to connect wirelessly to a neighbors Internet, without their knowledge. Is that illegal?

My attitude, right or wrong, is that if you don't want me latching onto a signal then keep it off my property.

Google Mobile phone repeater or Mobile phone booster. Or look at eBay. There might be models that will make your aircard work.

So if it is illegal to share your signal with a neighbor then it must be illegal to share it with a house guest as well or even multiple users in the same household, they better start building more jails for this crime spree:laughing:

I wonder if mounting a Mi-Fi card (cellular internet that provides a home wi-fi connection) up on the roof or a mast would boost the range and provide a home service.

One of the great things I have experienced while belonging to TBN over the years is that members are always willing to share knowledge with each other.

The knowledge they provide might not always be correct, sometimes skirts the barriers of legality, might be heavily biased, or opinionated, perhaps ever flat out WRONG now and then.

But what the heck, it's the willingness to share and help other members that makes TBN so great. When I want only facts, I use Wikipedia to provide those.

But when I want opinions and advice, I seek it here. It's a simple as that.

Or at least encrypt it with WPA2.

While we would all like to think that because a signal falls on our property, we have the right to receive it (me included). But the courts have found otherwise, and decreed that cellphone, pager etc, communication is illegal to receive or at least to reveal the content.. Even some countries have made certain broadcast signals intended for widespread reception illegal for their own political purposes. The only time I have seen that it was OK to reveal the content of private cellphone conversations when it was done to Newt Gingrich, but that was unusual circumstances as he was a Republican, and they were good Democrat supporters, so it was sanctioned this one time, and they were hailed as heroes.
