TSC sells 2 lines of hydraulic Fluid. The better one meets the specs of UDT.

Any fluid either meets SAE specs or it doesn't. Most manufacturers specify their fluid or equivalent. If the SAE specs say that its the equivalent, then it should be fine. The manufacturers stuff may have some other feature, but any equivalent should do the job just as well. IMHO
Maybe I should have said UDT instead of SAE :(

I agree cheap fluid is cheap for a reason, however viscocity out of the can should be good, it just breaks down faster. I would not use it but it also should not be causing the problem described. I can't for the life of me understand why people spend $20,000 on equipment, expecting it to last and save $20 on service.

I think you need a qualified service tech, you may be causing more damage by running it.

I doubt it has anything to do with brand names. Sounds more like a clown used high gear when it should have been in low gear. Then sold it.

I did use the premium fluid from TSC, which says on it that it is equivalent to Kubota UDT. But the problem was there before I changed the fluid, anyway.

Sounds like a defective hydrostatic relief valve, at least that's where I would start looking. It could simply have some debris in it and is not fully closing.

There is a procedure for checking the pressures that the hydro unit is putting out and which valves to check. The valves are external and can be changed without tearing down the transmission.

I can post more details if you need, or if you plan to do the work yourself your best bet is to spend the $50 or so on the service manual.

BTW, when it is working properly it will spin the tires in low gear under almost any circumstance. If you have enough traction, even in low gear, you can pull the motor down until the engine almost stalls (just like a gear tractor.)

well, it's nice to know it may not need a whole new hst. A stuck or leaky relief valve certainly could make it do what it's doing. Think I will get a manual... Another possibility I thought of would be a slipping clutch, tho I don't know how you could wear one out in 350 hours with an hst. Thanks for all the replies.

I don't understand the logic either. Lubricants, even top shelf lubricants are cheap in comparison to a new piece of equipment.

I also agree that something is amiss internally, something that the backyard wannabe wrench should really not delve into. Hydrostat flow charts themselves, befuddle me.:confused2:

TSC is the Harbor Freight of farm stores. Other than branded items (like Shell Rotella or PB Blaster or other known brands of quality, I buy nothing branded TSC. Interestingly, Menards kicks TSC's butt on Shell oil. TSC branded stuff is at best, low quality (at a price that reflects that).

The one thing that frys my cookies about TSC is the return policy. Basically, if you buy it, you are stuck with it.

The only thing I buy there consistently, is pellet stove pellets and only because it's Indiana Hardwood and I can get full skids.
