I like the bigger squares. The smaller ones make it all too busy. And I think the larger squares have more "punch" just cause they are bigger. You said before you have red trim for around the edges. That would go well also ....and maybe keep you out of trouble with Purina. not that they would care I'm sure ...just sayin'.

Mike,
I like the bigger squares also. Less work installing them also. The red border I mentioned is part of the door frame. It is a U shaped channel to keep the weather away from the 2x6 frame. Some of the bracing is on top of it, but could be moved if needed.

Brandi, are you sure you are not trying to make your place look like an airport? (see attachment)

I think putting all those metal squares of two colors on a door is going to be a super hassle. I'd just put on the red then mask it off and paint on the white squares. That way you could have continuous metal and normal overlaps.

Jim,
My place is under the landing pattern for Montgomery County Airport (CXO). The Army has a reserve training base there with "numerous" Apache attack helicopters. I get a lot of low level flights by the Apaches and an occasional Chinook. I have thought about painting the words, "GO ARMY AVIATION", on top of the barn. So I guess maybe you are right about making it look like an airport. Nothing so glorious than to see (and hear) a flight of Apaches armed to the teeth fly over.

I thought about painting the checkerboard on the door. I just wonder how long the paint will last.

If you were painting red on white, it would fade and flake. I would think white on red would last longer and certainly would be easier to match in color if it ever needed repainting. You also eliminate all those cut edges that Eddie mentioned.

Jim,
If I did paint it, it would be with white paint. Wouldn't I have to sand to rough up the areas needing painting..........more work. If I use 3 foot squares like I am leaning to use, I would not have any rough edges.

Brandi, I don't think sanding would be necessary. Baked on steel coatings are not shiny, but rather a flat finish. Other paint including latex seems to adhere easily to those surfaces when the surface is clean. I would scrub the surface to remove any manufacturing oil residue and then shoot white paint directly onto the colored surface. A good quality exterior acrylic enamel should work.

Trying to work with colored metal sections, maintaining the proper overlap, and keeping straight lines so that the checkerboard doesn't look skewed is a big job. I guess you could put on a tier and then pop a chalkline to keep straight edges for the next overlap.

Definitely the three foot squares and the Purina checkerboard looks good. I too, would opt for painting over the panels for all of the reasons already given. The barn floor looks great. Keep those pictures coming.

Jim,
Laying out the squares to be painted or laying out where metal squares should go will probably be about the same amount of time and patience.

Easy thing about the square metal is it will just be.....remove screws where square goes and install screws over white panel. Paint will need to be hired out or me buy a paint gun.

I can paint good enough and have paint touched up a few aircraft and installed logos and names and such, but my specialty is sheetmetal.

The metal comes with a guarantee. Don't remember how long on the white, but the "banner" red is a 30 year fading guarantee. I think the white is 20 year. I think the paint will fade before that.

Thanks Lee! It will definitely be the 3 foot sqaures and will almost resemble the Purina logo, but be a little different.

Have Y'all got any rain? We have been averaging about a half inch a day here, since last Thursday, in random rain squalls.
