Mooseracing, I'm not going to do it. I don't have the money or know how to deal with a fancy filter system. And NH parts are already expensive, I really don't want to buy more. But I hope it works out for you. I think it could be a viable idea but needs to be more user friendly for the working man.

Waste oil blending is actually very common on larger diesel engines. I have worked with the Centinal system by Cummins and also a system on Caterpillars, although that name escapes me right now. Caterpillar allows up to a 5% blend for a one time use following an oil change. An onboard automated system allows for up to a 1% blend on a continuous basis.

You have to keep in mind however, that these systems were not intended to increase engine fuel lubricity or anything like that. The reason for waste oil blending is to extend oil change intervals (waste oil continuously metered out and fresh oil continuously metered in), and to solve the disposal issue. These are engines which hold 50 gallons of oil, so we're talking significant costs associated with oil changes and disposal.

For our compact tractors and farm tractors, there really is no need - or benefit, to waste oil blending. It probably won't hurt, but why bother. It never ceases to amaze me how guys spend 25,000 on a tractor then try to nickle and dime the oil changes. Or try to save a gallon of fuel on a compact tractor that burns like 5 gallons a day. Go figure!

I have always considered diesel as oil, so it shouldn't be for lubrication. Cost is not part of the equation either, or at least probably shouldn't be. Soot, I think, if well filtered will 'polish' the metal, but some particles will likely be larger, as it takes a lot of filtration to keep particles that small. And the injectors is a whole other issue. I think the consensus has been made...

As you said with so- many others...Small consumption, by precise equipment, It is Fool-hardy..Our Cement contractor does it in his mixer trucks, but they are aged...

One of my fuel blending buddies is playing with waste engine oil. He used to just filter to 2 microns (same as his fuel filter) before dumping it into his tank. He recently purchased a centrifuge for cleaning his WVO. He ran some waste engine oil through it after filtering and it caught a lot of junk and some significant moisture. Waste engine oil is some dirty stuff!

hence the word 'waste'

This horrible stuff you all call "waste oil" is the same stuff you had in your crankcase 5 minutes ago. it was fine for lubricating your engine.

I'll likely never burn waste oil as fuel in my little tractor but I sure do in my boat. I have done so for many years, many boats. And I'm one of many many many doing so. I admit boats are different, particularly because they have far more sophisticated fuel filters. Mine comprises 6 filters for 2 engines; 30 micron, 10 micron and 2 micron. If you had a 2 micron filter - worth $30 - you could do the same in your tractors.

.

the tolerances in the engine aren't like the tolerances in the injection pump and injectors.

Not sure if helpful, but last winter tried to burn some old but unopened 10-30w engine oil in my little diesel/kerosene vented heater, mixed thinly with the diesel, and it left a mess of carbon remains down in the burner. Normally just diesel or kerosene left everything pretty clean.
