Diesel Addititives - Do I Need To?

   / Diesel Addititives - Do I Need To? #21
I'm one with no technical knowledge, haven't done any tests, etc. but the real farmers I knew in my area added Power Service (white bottle) to all their diesel, so I dumped a bottle in my 55 gallon barrel each time I bought diesel. And of course gelling was never a consideration in the Texas heat, even in the winter.

Bird, here in our tanks under the gen sets,2000 gal to 200 gal we must use biocides, or the fuel gets nasty.I only write this as it gets about as hot here as in Texas?Plus the gens are ran weekly to keep the pumps working, and we have engines from a lot of mfrs.

I've never used any additives on my diesels but I run my tractor pretty regularly in the summer and even crank it up some in the winter...
It does not get very cold here except for a few months in the winter anyway...
I can tell you though that my fuel pump in my 03 F350 seized a couple years ago...
I attribute it to the low sulfur diesel sold now...
I now add some to each tank that I purchase for my truck...

i've only experienced fuel gelling one time.

i'm here in florida where it stays toasty usually.. I have an f450 that has a transfer tank in the bed. nice one.. all automagic.. on the coldest morning of the year, last year, I needed to run to georgia in the morning.

that truck I keep full of diesel for hauling and what not.. but it don't see alot of miles otherwise... I had a full tank of summer fuel.

when i started her I noticed the xfer computer showed an error.. no flow!!

i had to warm everything around the pump and hose in / out of the tank up with a hair drier to get it flowing.. then I doesed it double strength with power service.

glad I got it going.. hauling a load with only a 20g main tank capacity would hav3 been maddening stopping every few hours for fuel.. etc.

more wear?

soundguy

More wear is in elevated #'s compated to not using it. Higher numbers were in, from my old melon, Alu, Tin, Iron and one more.

I stopped using it and went down. Just saying at normal dosage watch your UOA's.

I have not used it in years and last year was -20F...No issues with OTR fuel.

I use Stanadyne Lubrication product and I swear the tractor seems to run smoother and quieter with it.

I bet it does. Stanadyne makes decent products. Two questions. What is the treat ratio? and How much does it cost you?

I buy the small bottle. I think it was $18.00 and it treats 65 gallons.

That falls in line with everything I've been talking about in previous threads. There are a number of quality products that can compete with Schaeffer's performance. However, those products are always more expensive. Your treat costs for the Stanadyne is .28 per treated gallon of fuel. Schaeffer's Diesel Treat 2000 will perform at least as well, many people have told me better, for .05 per treated gallon when bought in pints. The pint will treat 125gallons. For those with large tanks 1 gallon will treat 2000 gallons of fuel making the treat cost less than .02 per treated gallon.

you can use MMO and do the samething.. They are acting as a UCL...Stanadaye has been around for years...Know alot of people that worked that in the 70 and 80's....

Ford loved it since they designed the old diesel pumps years ago.

If you use adds, do a UOA before and after...Wait till you see the results..Some are poor and some are better.

I have a 2000 John Deere 4700 with 1250 hours on it and a 2002 Duramax with 110k on it. I'm the original owner of both. Have never used any additives in either, and have never had any issues whatsoever.

I live in VA and it can get quite cold in the winter, but not really for extended periods. I tend to buy all my diesel from the local BP station, and he does have an off-road pump. Of course on long trips, I'll fuel the Duramax from whatever stations I find along the way.

I just sold the 4700 and am getting a 5085M. I wasn't planning to begin using additives given my past positive experience, but I do sometimes ask myself if I'm pushing my luck or not?

With ultra low sulfer, a lube is needed but you will not see any issues until you do UOA.

I recently ran a tank of fuel with Seafoam in it through my Ford 2600 and it starts and runs much better now, with more power. I'm assuming my injectors must have been dirty. I'm not sure I'll use an additive regularly, but as an occasional tonic, yes.

I have used most of the major brands of fuel additives over the last 30 years, and I buy roughly 21,000 gallons of diesel a year.

FPPF Fuel Power has the best bang for the buck. It is a real good additive. They also make a real good biocide to kill all those diesel critters. Their Polar Power is a very good cold weather additive. They have something called Total Power, that combines a lot of the stuff they offer in the other products. Which ever item you choose, their stuff goes a long, long way. You sure won't have to buy additive much if you are a light user of diesel. An 8 oz bottle of fuel power treats 240 gallons. Compare that to amount of Power Service, Howes, etc. Not saying those others don't do a good job. They do. But no use spending gobs of money for more than you need.

try monster diesel. i know a ton of people who use it, including myself, and love the results. its kind of hard to find now though but you can get it off upandoutboatlifts.com

When one part of Monster Diesel(TM) is added to 1,000 parts of diesel fuel, the energy density of the diesel has been shown to increase by 9.9%.
So this magic elixir has roughly 100 times the energy of diesel? And some people think it's real?

If there is one thing that comes to mind when I think of those very same people it's that "a fool and his money are soon parted"...

Well I have used it for years and never had any problems. In fact, when I started using it, my truck was smoking like crazy. I put this stuff in and I could see and feel the difference almost immediately. What do they say....proof is in the pudding?? Since you seem so knowledgeable about additives, what do you use?

Myself, I could say the same thing about MMOil.Over 20 years...But it was not with Ultralow sulfur..So I had to mend my ways and now try to read about all of it...I guess I will use the mmo for a penatrant or as a light machine oil..

i know it sure can make a ticking rattling valve train on an old gasser quiet up a bit.. :)

Since lubricity and additives is the topic, I don't know where else to ask. I have this unopened drum of Paradyne 647C. I did some Googling and it may be an old additive product from a company called Infineum USA. I'd hate to add it without knowing what it is but with the price of Diesel additives, a newly discovered drum should last a long time. I have a New Holland tractor and an IH with a 466 in it.

My other concern is that this is some ultra toxic banned product that the guy here before me "left" for the next guy. (I sent Infineum an email - no answer yet).
