I found a 2001 f250 regular cab 4x4 with a v8 with 46,000 miles on it, even though it is not a 3 valve would it still make a good all around truck?

No doubt. I had a 01, F250. 5.4L V8. Yes it is a good truck.

I'm not doubting you one bit, but my experience working on 6.0L Fords has been the opposite. Guys around here brag that they went 100k before they replaced the injectors or headgaskets or FICM or whatever. I'm sure that their are plenty of reliable 6.0L trucks out there, I just haven't seen very many.

I really don't care for the power delivery either. They just don't lug(neither does the 7.3) like a 5.9. It's really amazing how that little Cummins feels like a much bigger engine.

That's odd. Looking as SOLD auctions on eBay, I see lots of ones like this Ford : F-350 | eBay It's got a quarter million miles on it and it sold for $14,600. Here's one very similiar to mine but with almost a hundred thousand more miles on it and it sold for what I paid for mine well over 3 years ago Ford : F-350 | eBay. I'm really not seeing anyone bragging about getting 100k miles on theirs and clearly they are bringing decent bucks with far more miles than that on them. I see lots of them with around 200k miles on them for sale.

I'm perfectly content with mine. Toyota had more problems with their 3.0 liter V6 sludging than there were problems with 6.0 PSD engines. You don't hear too much about them since there isn't dyed in the wool brand loyal owners from other makes slamming them on the internet and making early model year issues seem far worse than they were. If you care to do any research, the first year for just about any engine isn't so great. Dodges were real dogs when they first came out with the 5.9 and dealers everywhere complained about the Duramax engines their first year. I wouldn't buy a new vehicle with a brand new engine in it during it's first year. Would you?

I had a mid-year '04 F-350 Dually with the 6.0. I personally never had any problems with the engine. Pulled lots of heavy loads of tractors and hay. From the things I have read and talking with the dealership service advisor, lots of the 6.0 problems were caused by using a chip or programmer on a stock engine. Extra horsepower caused the heads to lift and blow head gaskets. If you changed out the studs on the heads that seemed to fix most problems. Also a lot of the early problems were computer related, Ford issued many flashes for the computer and some didn't work out well. By late '04 through '07 the 6.0 seemed to be a good engine.

I have a 2000 7.3 and will never get rid of it. 300,000 and still going strong on the same injectors and transmision. I don't pull very often or that heavy so that has had to have helped my luck.

I will say the company I used to work for bought all new 6.0's when I started with them in 04 over, 30 trucks. They were constantly in the shop. Some guys had ok luck with them others were in the shop all the time. We had so many problems with them that when they announced they were coming out with the new 6.4 we bought all new 6.0's with the updated motors. They did this because they were scared that another new motor would have just as many problems. That company just bought all new trucks again and this time bought only gas motors. No more diesels.

The repair that made me the maddest was a FICUM (however you spell it) the truck got a battery that was weak. The truck would still start and run but the low voltage burnt up the computer. No warning or anything, over a $1,000 repair for weak battery.

i had forgotten about that. shortly after I got that f250/6.0psd/04, it had a recall and they replaced the ecu... never had an issue with it that I know of though.. no heads blown off.. ;)
