With the bottom washer on, through nut will not reach the shaft. Without it can not screw the nut down enough to tighten the disk.

Sanding disks curl up or roll up very soon after the sealed package is opened. Soaking them in water lets them unroll and a little weight helps. They are water proof and work wet as good as dry. Don't last as long as a flap wheel, but are very aggressive, 24 & 36 grit.

See Picture

Something that seems common is the flanges that keep the lower washer from turning on the shaft are much 2 short of shallow. On the Porter Cable it often slips on to the round and really locks up. Big Pain.

I own 4. (2) 4" makitas that were my dad's,1 cheaper line Dewalt, and a 4 yr old Ridgid. I was told that Metabo made Ridgids grinders. Does anyone know if that is true.

I researched and looked at numerous 4.5" grinders last fall. We've got Metabo's at work, tried them. Liked the Dewalt 10A model for my probable weekend only use. Put it on my Christmas list last year. Got 3 of them! Took 2 back, figuring "don't need more than one". Wrong! I wished I would have kept all of them. Three would be ideal for my purposes: 1) cutoff wheel 2) grinding disc 3) wire wheel.

Oh, BTW, the Dewalt is a nice tool. Can't say anything bad about it and I've cut a fair amount of metal with it (for a non-pro). Probably go through 4-5 cutoff wheels on a typical weekend use when I'm in "project mode". I don't use my oxy-acetylene torch as much either. Just hope it holds up over time. Will probably add it to my Christmas list again this year.

I had one of the cheapies lock up good. It wasn't a HF one. It was some hardware store brand. I had to disassemble the head and put it in a vice and use a pipe wrench to get the lock nut off. Still use it weekly, though.
