Hello & WELCOME to TBN!

I moved your thread to the Massey Ferguson Owning/Operating Forum. :)

Hello Bernard and welcome.

I remember reading about this in my manual, which is at home and I'm on the road right now. My 135 would do the same thing if I have the lift control lever to "transport", which is when the lift lever is all the way to the back of the quadrant. To get to transport you have to move past the full up detent.

Is this what's happening for you or is it all the way through the lift range while driving that you're having the problem?

That's not TRANSPORT when you go past the detent....That's "constant pumping". Transport is against the detent. Constant pumping position keeps the pump running for such purposes as running a loader.

The knocking sound is the relief valve bypassing while the pump continues to run. That's perfectly normal on 100 series Massey's.

It's common for the relief valve to knock when lift quadrant is raised to "constant pumping" mode. (Past detent when lift quadrant position lever is raise) But that isn't effected by gear changes in tranny.

So....does the knocking stay at a constant rate as rpm's (motor) is changed? Does the knocking change rate as ground speed changes? MAY be a chipped gear in tranny

If it's the relief valve, it can "quiet down" some as engine rpms change.

As I said, on the road right now so I can't confirm what I'd read, FWJ has been around these beasts a long time so I don't doubt he's right.

Regardless, for the purpose of your problem, it isn't normal if you are hearing the pump knock through all ranges of travel. On mine the noise will reduce in high range / higher gears while travelling and the lever selected to the "bypass" or what I'd referred to as transport range, past the uppermost detent.
