My 12" rankin auger sucks!!!

Something just occurred to me.. the teeth are supposed to be staggered across the two cutting edges. For instance, say each cutting edge has three possible locations for teeth, or four. One one edge, there will be a tooth at the outer edge, skip one spot going in toward the shaft, then another tooth. On the opposite edge, the outer spot will be left empty, the second one will have a tooth, and so on.

This way there is no "dead spot" in the cutting surfaces that will ride on the ground and keep the auger from digging.

the teeth are fine, they are sending out a new auger head to try i guess. They were just as baffeled as i was. it was funny, the guy who came to help me said the service manager was laughing saying it was a case of operator error and to go show the Newbie how to use the auger properly. little does he know, im not retarded.

It has been years ago but we bought an power auger from Tractor Supply that would not dig, and went through all this. The one thing we were slow to notice was the auger bit was welded up at the factory BACKWARDS!

When I first started using my auger, I noticed that it was only digging so far into dry soil and then would just spin. I looked at the teeth and noticed that the bottom of the teeth had a flat surface behind the cutting edge that seemed to just be polishing the bottom of the hole rather than cutting in. It occurred to me that if the teeth were flipped over the other way they might cut in better. I flipped the teeth and it has dug without a problem since. I can't tell from the pics if your teeth are like that, but try flipping them over and see if that helps.

well sometimes my auger wont even get into the ground far enough for the teeth to dig, the Pilot bit as i call it just spins in the ground and does nothing, when the tractor guy came out we could not even get it to get the teeth to touch the grass.

However i did notice something, the Boom has 2 holes that allow you to adjust the boom up and down where it mounts to the U shaped hoop, and that pin that holds is together is in there so tight that we had to get a Sledge hammer just to get the pin out to move it one hole farther back to allow more height off the ground from the auger head.

So i was thinking maybe its binding somehow and not allowing all the wieght to transfer to the ground, as its a very tight fitting but im not sure if it pivots there or just moves as one unit up and down

so we have been trying to dig holes with the auger and that thing is a joke!! i spent 3 hours on 7 two feet deep holes, this thing will not dig.

I even had my woman on the tractor and i was literally jumping on the top of the auger boompole trying to add down force and it wont dig. Our dirt is not even that hard, i can use a post hole digger no problem.

i called the dealer and they said it was most likely operator error, but they came out anyways and were very suprised that i was right, it does nothing. Just spins and spins, even tried water for some cutting lube.

Am i missing something or are these only good in sand and snow???

It can only be adjustment if all of the parts are in place. My B7510 Kubota Digs 42" deep12" holes in anything including some shale I got into the other day. Ask a neighbor who uses a digger to look over your setup. It should just clear the ground when elevated for travel. That should give you maximum travel down the hole. If it won't start digging, you are probably missing the screw shaped part on the bottom or it is adjusted too high to let it dig down. Ed H

I opted for renting a dingo from HD. It's best use is as a post hole digger asit comes with 3-4 different augers . I've sense rented it again it works so well. Plus it has a narrow cut trencher.

It has hydraulic down as well as up. That makes the biggest difference. You can modulate bit speed real easy and its manuvers in tight spaces.

When drilling with a crappy bit using a power drill, some plunge pressure is needed.

I studied getting a phd for my bx24 but realized it wasn't worth the investment in time and money with no hydraulic down force.

Maybe a some weight on the boom, prewetting the soil, adjusting teeth, and slow down rpm.

Now I was wondering what would happen if you took the auger off and rented one or buy from TSC that fits your phd shaft that is a different manufacturer? If it starts to work the way it should, then a call to rankin and b!@#$ your head off explaining all the things you have done, esp after having a dealer to come out and say, huh! dunno what to tell ya?!. This would tell you its not your tractor, nor any binding issue.
