Old Case 580CK for farm backhoe

I'm a "Newby". I got my 1970 580 with loader and backhoe last week and I am so glad I found you guys. I have less than an acre and am hounded with the question "why did you want this thing?" I tell everyone it's my mid-life crisis red Corvette. I actually said that yesterday to a guy that has a red Corvette and he replied "I bet you'll have a lot more fun..." Anyway, mine has leaky cylinders, weak brakes, missing muffler, inflated but terrible tires (hate to spend $$ on these) and a couple of "scary" looking hydraulic hoses but all of it works. I've already learned a bunch from you. One question in particular I have at this point is on hose diameters. I really don't know if what is on there is something that someone just had available or if its the correct size. Would it be correct to assume that the steel line connected to the hose should indicate the relative size of the hose? Thanks, TommyTee

TommyTee-
You can certainly have some fun with that machine. Sounds like you're going to get intimately familiar with that one. I'm new to these machines, but I'd guess you could take the hose to some NAPA or similar shops to have a matching hose made... or they might direct you to a local shop.

I have several acres (some to clear) and a 0.75 mi gravel drive that needs improvements. I'm still looking for an old machine, at the right price.

Hi ktrout, I found mine on eBay and got it for $2500 and then found someone through uShip who delivered it (350 miles) for $700. So far, there have been no surprises and the equipment was very accurately described. Good luck finding one. Obviously, they're out there for good prices if you are willing to do a little work on them. I also found a service manual on CD and an original owners manual, both on eBay, and both VERY helpful. Not bad, as long as the engine, transmission, and hydraulic controls are in good condition. I've looked at some of the eBay sales. I just wouldn't know what to expect, once taking delivery... problems that weren't disclosed in the Seller's description.
Your cost was right, and seems you can make some lower cost repairs without exceeding a reasonable resale value.
I expect to be the last owner of whatever "running" machine I buy...

I also just recently bought a 580D with a enclose cab. Maybe I paid too much 6 thou delivered craigslist. But I am happy with it. I am present detailing the machine to get myself familiar with the unit. I see one thing I have to do is to cut the floorplate in half and cut the pedestal base out of the floorplate because right now the seat pedestal has to come off to get to the bottom lines and valves. I intend to pressure wash down there often. :licking:

If the 580D is in decent shape I think you did very well!

Sounds okay to me... I'm finding some sellers asking upwards of $12k for these machines. I think $8k-10k is closer to a realistic price. These are 30-35 year old machines that have much deferred maintenance.

KT, are you saying these old machines are full of surprises?

Surprise, well not if you have the tools to repair them. I first bought a Cat 910 loader I was worried and concerned with the transmission going out on me but for five it sounded the same and never miss a work day. Then I bought a Dynahoe 200-4 with a detroit 4-71N problem with the machine is no parts to buy and very large, it cracks my black top drv way. Plus steering with the back wheels took some getting use to. Now with my '89 580D piece of cake seem like every part is smaller than my previous machines. This case has been neglected big time by the contractor that owned for 15yrs. it is easy to work on and parts are smaller and more available.

I understand, mine is the same. I'm finding lots of little things that don't work, most you really don't need but they are things "I" want working like the tach, lights broken off grease fittings, etc. I also found out we have a salvage dealer about 30 miles from here that has nothing but farm and construction equipment. Can't wait to check it out but I have to get my list together first. Tommy
