Whuch Tires do I get? AG? Industrial?

Around here R4's are useless also. Its due to us having clay soil. They load up and are slicks in no time.

I use my tractor quite a bit in the woods and never had a tire issue in 850 plus hours and 7 years on R1's.

I also mow and never have any issues on my 3 acres. My rears are filled on my R1's.

My uncle has the same year JD with 35 HP, 7 moe HP than mine. He has had to call me to do snow removal because of lack of traction with his R-4's and my tractor will flat out work his any day of the week with its R1's except for PTO power.

If you are not on the lawn often go with R-1's. I have 19 years on my original rear tires on a Kubota L4150. Used with logging winch, backhoe, all types of farm attachments. Fronts were replaced from cupping. Too much turning in 4WD. The fronts squat a bit when the fel is straining but not a problem.
On a Challenger MT285B (same as Massey 1547) I replaced the rear R-4s with R1's (to get more rows in on the farm- gained 8" per row) I left the fronts alone. I carefully picked an R1 tire that matched the circumference of the R4 so as to not mess up the gears in 4WD. That arrangement works well.

I have not read all the posts, but half way through and I am convinced you need R4's on the front axle and AG's on the rear. For particularily muddy areas, you could put chains on the front R4's

I've read elsewhere that R4s are next to worthless in snow and ice without chains. They probably fill with snow between the treads and then are just slicks. But I hadn't thought about what I read here- with R4s with chains the chain links won't fall between the treads as much as with Ags- makes sense. I think I'm leaning toward R4s on my 5 acres of hilly territory which is bone dry in the summer and a mud puddle in the winter. R4s are not as good in mud, but in winter, I'll only be on a gravel road clearing snow.

For what its worth, I've had all three and prefer Industrial. Turf load with mud and make a mess dragging the mud everywhere. I don't even like them for grass to be honest. AG are great for field work and snow. I would go with Industrial because they are easier on the grass than AG and they won't leave spin marks like Turf tires in the grass. Ind are better on soft grass and don't leave deep impressions like the AG tires. When I did need chains which is rare even when we had 2 foot snows, I only used chains on the front tires. The rear tires loaded with liquid gave me more than enough weight to move heavy snow. If you are working in muddy fields you better get AG tires for sure.

That is what I figured.
Maybe I will ALWAYS be timid... :)

Good plan. I almost rolled my little Kubota B7510HST (21 hp engine, 17 hp pto) while moving a pile of soil that was left over from my house construction. Pushed the bucket into the pile, curled to fill the bucket and stepped on the HST reverse pedal. Right front wheel dropped into a deep wheel rut, left rear came off the ground in a flash. Fortunately I was able to lower the bucket quickly enough to avoid a rollover. It happens when you least expect.

Be careful out there.

Did you have good ballast on the 3pt? Filled tires? That helps a bunch, but there is never any guarantee, Yep wheel in a hole. Nightmare, or high side tire on an old unseen stump or rock, BTDT. Or just going to darn fast with a load on and turning slightly uphill..done that too.. once. bad news. I didn't turn over, but one wheel probably came up 2 foot. I was "skeert" plenty.

James,

I will try to keep ALL those in mind! I don't wanna be skeert!

PS - This is my 200th post!

It is raining heavily here, wind is not bad. Irene is still hours away, not before dark they say. We've filled the tubs and I moved one of the BBQ's under the carport so I can cook no matter what.

Be well everyone!
