Dave, no engineers here, minimum codes(foundation/structural & final inspection only). You are right about the banks.....they use any excuse to jack the rate up....and love the phrase, "non conforming structure". Don't get me going on what the credit report companies and the banks are doing to the average persons credit score just so they can raise our rates....it's criminal.

Wood, I am going to use single wire 14 gauge for lights/fans and 12 for outlets...I hope I can squeeze them all in there....no romex in the emt.

I am laying the logs over the windows and doors now. Had to do a little fancy work on the conduit to route it around a stained glass transom that we picked up on sale the other day. It will go over the front door and is 67" long.

I'm wondering if Woodlandfarms is correct in how cozy the wiring might get. Maybe you should do a dry run on running a few wires through the emt to make sure everything fits. You can always get larger emt to make life easier for you. And too this is not a criticism! You are doing a great job and your place will be beautiful when done. Stanley

I had a electrician here today installing my 200 amp service panel in the basement. This will double as my temp service. I had him take a look at the 3 gangs & 1/2" emt. He said, yes it would be tight depending on how may things I want to run. Interior light, celing fan and exterior light should all fit. But, he did point out a silly code that says that all entry doors(I have 4) on the same floor have to all have a common switch to control the same light. Who comes up with these things? This is my house, I am not building it for someone else, so I will never understand how things like this get into the "code". Really, if I want the main floor entry door switch to turn a light on in my dogs house that should be my choice. I have to say if I had the $ I would be installing solar w/a battery bank....not tied to the grid...no fees and inspections.

I am still on a generator and it looks like at least two more weeks before the power company gets two poles set and hangs a transformer. I did have quite the discussion with them over them wanting to cut a 40' swath of trees to run power diagonally across my pasture & up the ridge(1200'). When I pointed out a straight line run from the road(1/2 in distance shorter than their proposal) and asked if they could run an insulated service line requiring only a 10' swath the guy said, "Oh, why yes I guess that would work too" ......... I should not complain too much all of this including about 100' of underground into the house is only going to cost me $256.

SRS it's too late to change to 3/4 emt, but looking back it would have been a better choice...............{sigh}

On a good note my TRACTOR IS FIXED...I picked it up this morning:thumbsup:

Ouch, that is going to be tight.

What was the final verdict on the problem? Head gasket?

How are you going to deal with shrinkage of the logs with your emt?

I did some repairs on a log home that had shrunk and moved about 1/4" per log unless you leave room for that you might have problems.

I used ent for the additions I added .

That's a sweet deal! 1800' of underground is costing me $11,000 PLUS I have to dig the trench and install the conduit!!!!! Overhead would have been 3 times more expensive but they would have set the poles and run the wire.

Good news about your tractor and great progress on your house. I can smell that beautiful wood everytime I see pictures of it and the sawdust.

Tom I cut a over sized hole/channel for the emt. If there is any substantial settling, the logs will be free to move down around the emt.

I have the first course above all the windows and doors up. I was only 1/2" low 4' off one corner of the house, all other walls were within 1/4". For a log house at 8' this is not bad. I have 4 more courses to go to get to 9'3"-5" high and that will be the final hight.

I had more help today so we milled another 4 rafters...only 12 to go.

Rick, great project........and thanks for the link to it.

22 years ago when I started my house the owner was allowed to do his/her on electrical as long as it met the code of the supplier (rural electric). So, I did all the electrical myself. I picked up a code book from the local co-op. I actually installed more outlets than code called for ......and seems I need more.

One thing I did was "stub-off" extra circuits in the attic and basement for future use. I also prepared a listing of all circuits for future reference.....starting at the 40 breaker 200 amp service to each outlet, I identified where the circuit went. I also identified each junction box and how the circuits come and went thru them. That has helped me to chase down at least two non-working outlets in the last 20 years.

I also did my own plumbing .......PVC drain and copper supply! I insulated all the copper (both cold and hot). Also, I installed the copper supply in a fashion that it can be drained (on a slope) back to the basement.

I'd like to do some retro-fitting for solar! We've been using the CFLs from day one. Those on the market today are not as good as the earlier ones in my opinion!

I'll continue to follow your project.......hope to see you soon!

Hey Andy, I will be using PEX for all the plumbing. My Father in law is a retired plumber, so I hope to ship him down from Manitoba to help me with the installation:thumbsup:

In '83 I bought a book at McCoys Lumber on plumbing and read it several times...then plumbed the whole house....and belive it or not it all actually worked...I have to say I was suprised.

Rick the house is really taking shape. How many rafters did you get out of that one 28 inch log? I'm glad Laymon was there to help with that one. Its way too easy to get hurt trying to do that alone.

I think you are going to wish you had used larger conduit to your switch boxes. Besides being a bit*ch to pull the NEC addresses conduit fill to prevent mechanical damage to the conductors and to prevent overheating. Hopefully the inspector will not be hard line on it.

Good work all around. Its going to be a great day when its under roof,. :)
