Very dangerous though. If you are on just a tad too much angle, the nail can glance off and ricochet around the shop:confused2: Dont ask me how I know. I will never use a nail gun on ANYHTING but wood from now on.

That too!

My porter cable 3 1/2 nailer will drive nails through the joist hanger even when I miss the hole. Messy sometimes.

What does your building inspector say when he (or in my case, she) sees that.

The joist hangers are engineered to have the proper sized nails in the factory punched holes. Anything else may be strong enough, but has not been tested and will not pass inspection.

One of the great beauties of a Teco nailer is that all of the modern nails have the gauge of the nail stamped on the head and they can be inspected without pulling a few.

I started my basement project using screws, but during the project I ended up building some three rail fence and for the fence I bought a Hitachi full head framing nailer. After the fence there is no way I want to drive screws unless they are the only option.

I didn't have electricity where the fence was being built so I used the "On Board Air" (OBA) system I built for my IHC Scout. I ran my Hitachi framing nailer great.

Here is a link to a OBA system that a guy built. Do some google searches on OBA and Jeeps or 4x4s and you get tons of info.

As far as nailing framing bracket the nails will fly if you nail at an angle and miss the hole.

For a project like this my plan of action would be to hit the flea markets and Craigslist to get a gas powered compressor and nail gun, or a generator, compressor and nail gun.

Do the job with the right used tools, then sell them on CL for 80% of what I paid...or maybe keep them if I got a really good deal on them.

Those hoseless nailers are great, when we do not have enough of them on the job there is always a fight over gets them. Increases the speed of production and I like them for toenailing.
Be careful where you place your hands, if the nail extends through it can find your fingers.

Elkins45,

I like this idea, but I might need to move faster than I can find the tools I need on CL... I will try to borrow a few, but the ones I suspect I will be using alot, I should just buy them.

Be well,

David

PapaPerk,

Lowes in my neighbor hood has a 7lb, 7.5lb, and a 7.9 lb at 3 different prices. the 7.5 is highly rated on lowes.com as is the 7lb.

Which one do you use?

Right now I'm thinking get a small generator, maybe upgrade the air compressor, and run an air nailer (get a framing nailer and a finish nailer and I should be good to go, right?)

I like the round head nailer idea. BUt how do they make clips of round head nails?

Thanks,
David

Are you talking about the weight of the nails?

The nails that I use are just like a 3.5" 16 p nail. But they are all joined together using a plastic substrate. This holds the angle and spaces the heads apart. They work great. I've always had good luck getting nails at home depot.

Full head nail guns are really the way to go in my opinion. Of course like others have said they should not be used for certain applications like Simpson Stong Ties, etc. Those are special nails! ;)

PapaPerk,

The weight of the Hitachi Nail Gun I believe.:)

Thanks for the nail info!

so yall know nails do have a cert. shear strength. They have been used in "pop off " valves in the oil field for a very long time.
