Loader FEL capacity with a boom

Why not just buy a cherry picker, aka an engine hoist? They are not that expensive.

I just finished lifting trusses 15' above the ground (to the bottom chord) by bolting a 2x6 to the cheek of my bucket. Things aren't particularly smooth with a tractor. The precision lifting and lowering needed to remove and install an engine safely would be tough with a tractor.

I guess that would depend on why he is removing the engine:D

Me and a buddy scrap quite a few cars. So we dont worry about precision.

My 2 favorite ways we have pulled motors.....

1. Sawzall the front clip/core support off. Now that there is nothing in front, wrap a 3/8" logchain around the motor and transmission. (FWD car). A little slack in the chain to allow a ~10mph yank, and out she comes. Dont have to unbolt any mounts or CV shafts or nuthin:thumbsup:

2. Backhoe. Wedge bucket between engine and firewall and curl the bucket.

FEL capacity with a boom

I plan to build a boom this week for a Kioti CK20S HST. I need some estimates from your personal field experience please. What do you think the lift capacity will be, lifting from the outer end?

Relevant specs:
  • The base of the boom will slide into a standard 2" hitch receiver welded to the top of the bucket.
  • Boom will be fab'd from 2"x2"x 1/4" wall square tube mild steel
  • It will measure 7' from the top forward edge of the bucket to the boom's tip.
  • I will stretch a piece of rebar over the top of the boom, in tension, to counter the longitudinal flex
  • I'll weld a chain hook to the boom's outer tip
  • the boom will be supported by 2 struts, in compression, back down to the bottom, outside corners of the bucket.
  • I plan to model it after some of the booms I've seen here. Attached below is a simple sketch. NTS
Again, I'm looking for your best estimate on how much weight I can lift with this.

I have a very similar bucket boom, it is very handy, whatever the capacity is it will be well worth it to build. wild guess is 400- 450 for yours.

But why do you need such a long boom to pull a motor?

I think 500lbs is a bit optomistic. Certainly not to full height.

I had a CK20 with a quick attach adapter replacing the bucket and then a commercial tree boom attachment. That combo might weigh a bit more than the bucket/reciever/boom being discussed here but it was also much closer to the pivot point for the loader being only about four feet max.

I could lift a 360lb Bearcat chipper plus 50lb appliance dolly off a trailer bed but could not lift it over the rails (would have required close to full height lift). I ended up lifting it off the bed and then driving the trailer out from underneath.

The photos show the max height I could lift the chipper plus dolly. I could not curl it up any higher either. Note that the boom is not at max extension so I'd guess the load is only about four feet from the pivot pins. I doubt I could have lifted this 410lb at all if the boom was seven rather than four feet from the pivot pins.

(Note: I cannot recall exactly the model of chipper but it is the smallest of the Bearcat PTO chippers and the current model weighs 360lbs but might be a tad smaller than mine. I guessed on the weight of the appliance dolly.)

About $200 from HF for the two ton folding model. The 2 ton model is rated to lift 500lbs at the max extension of the boom.

Why not rent an engine crane. It's only about $25 from most tool rental places.

Best guess, without taking measurments, is about 500lbs.

Your tractor is rated @ 1074lbs @ the pins. Again, just guessing, but the pins are about 3' forward of where the lift cylinder attaches. and the boom is going to be about 7' beyond the pin. So that woud be roughly 3/7th of the lift capacity. 3/7 x 1074 is about 460.

If you actually take some real measurments, we can get a better idea.

And also, a bucket typically has more curl force @ the bucket. But due to the geometry, the farther out the boom you go, the curl power drops off at a quicker rate than the lift capacity. So you may be at the point where you can lift a load, but not curl it.

When we set the trusses for my polebarn (about 150lbs) we used a makeshift 20' boom attached to my tractor. I had no trouble lifting the truss, but the tractor would not curl them.
3/10?

I made an adapter plate with a quick hitch so I use my pig pole on the FEL. It works great and I load tested it to better than 600# on the L4400 Kubota.

Rent an engine hoist. Then build the boom pole later for whatever you might also need it for. As stated you won't have the precision control an engine hoist provides for a job it is designed for specifically. Trust me on this- I owned and ran a foreign car shop for over ten years and we had a collapsible hoist which always did the job no matter the engine or car. And depending on the car you may have to separate the engine /trans anyway to get them out.

Yep. Brain fart:confused2:

That makes it about 322lbs. But either way, It is still just guessing at the measurments. I was kinda hoping the OP would post back with some dimensions so I could sketch it out and figure it to a TEE.

In light of my error, he would have the 460lbs @ about 4' out on the boom. Using my guestimated dimensions:thumbsup:
