As Leonz said I would adapt your splitter to mount on your 3pt hitch keeping the splitter intact wheels & hitch included.
Last year I modified my splitter so i can slip my 3pt pallet forks under it and carry and place it anywhere i need.
I would rather use the engine and pump on my splitter (10hp 22gpm) rather than run it off my hydraulics which would be painfully slow.
You would find yourself running your tractor at or near full throttle or it would be painfully slow.
My 2 cents

Hey Tim I hadn't planned on using tractor hydraulics anyway and the splitter was too slow as is for me any way and it was too low also and needed the axle lowered to raise it to a more comfortable height and those little tires are going a million miles an hour behind me. :D

So a lot of the work I am contemplating needed to be done in some form anyway (bigger pump, taller tires) if I kept it as a tow behind and just lifted it with the bucket for that matter I pondered that option also.

Plus I just dont think I need a tow behind any more if I can convert it to a 3pt easy enough I just dont see it being a problem later on for me anyway?

I am not against the work like some would want me to be I just want to get the most out of it.

Remember that you will need a tank addition if you go PTO pump, I'd go to the 16GPM or 21GPM Prince PTO pump @ 540rpm. I don't know what your Yanmar PTO shaft looks like, but the Prince PTO pumps for 1000 RPM are 21 spline 1-3/8", not 6-1-3/8? I think they make one that is 6 spline, but they'd be harder ($$) to find in the higher GPM, cheap that is.

I'd think 21GPM on the 3.5 cylinder would be one fast SOB?

you have the PTO HP to drive either of these....so I'd forget the 2-stage idea and drive the splitter at 16 or 21 all the time.

" Speed costs money, how much have you got to spend? "
" The only substitute for cu.inches is cubic dollars "

(old hot-rodder sayings)

A 4.3 cu in hyd pump, direct driven off the PTO turning at 540 rpm, will pump 10 GPM, and at 3000 psi, HP required will be 21.

A 2.3 cu in pump at 1000 rpm will do the same thing.

A single stage pump will provide the constant pressure.. Timing cycle will be based on the GPM's used.

So it looks like a gear box, or a direct driven pump will be your best options.

Thanks JJ and N8ghz thats what I am wondering about I haven't had the time to go over the calculators LD1 provided I will here directly but those figures and opinions are some of what I am curious about.

I wish I could find the specs on the BH pump just for my info it is a mystery who built it I cant find a single thing on it???

After looking at tanks yesterday I wasn't able to better what I have already and looking at the reasons I am doing this anyway makes me think cutting the axle and taking the tongue off will be the best option.

I will have a good Briggs 5hp IC engine and a nice 2 stage pump left over and a couple wheels and tires I can use somewhere else. Having the tank left over would have been a waste so thats not too bad carnage if a guys got to hack a perfectly good tool up to make improvements to it imho so I think the pump is my only real variable at this point.

I believe I will attempt to use my BH pump since its already setup with the 1 3/8 6 spline if that isn't quite right I will build a splitter pump bracket with gear reduction which I believe I can do it so simple it will surprise anybody that sees it time will tell.

Either way the bracket I build for the BH pump will definitely be a plus for the BH. fwtw

You could do a flow and pressure test on the PTO pump and work from there. Then you can compute the cycle times. Different tractor engine speeds and different PTO speeds will produce many different flow rates. Some PTO pumps are rated for two speeds, like 540 and 1000 rpm.

Prince PTO pumps are relieved at about 2200 psi, so if you use it, you should reset the log splitter relief valve to about 2150 psi.

Does your pump look anything like this?

No the BH pump is similar to this one if the pic works.

In fact JJ I will go and get a pic of it so I have one on my pc to look at anyway I will be back here in a few minutes or so...

The emblem on the pump is a Prince emblem, but can't find a ref to an HR pump.

Could also be a Crown emblem.
