Tonnage is a factor of psi, and if you can increase it, the force will also increase. In splitting a log, some logs might only use 1500 psi to split, and very tough logs may use all the psi available.

On my computations for the cycle time, that was based on your stated 3 in, 18 in stroke cyl.

If we have full details, we can compute more data for you. Cyl size, pressure of the pump, length of the stroke. Extend stroke is slower than return, and the two added together will produce the cycle time.

Thanks JJ I will get back to this once I build the BH pump bracket and mount the splitter beam/tank to a 3 pt bracket may take me a week as busy as I just got today....

I am going to give it (the BH pump) a shot and see all it can do is not work as well as I like and even then its a needed improvement on the BH setup anyway I will do the gear reduction 2 stage simply because its the cheapest way.

Car Doc,

Have you seen this valve . It is a fast extend valve for log splitters .

It will make 4 GPM seem like 25 GPM, and that is equal to a two stage pump.

It can only be used with single stage pumps, like your tractor or your PTO pump, and not with the two stage.

I think I will start another thread about that valve. I wonder how long it has been available and if anyone here has used one?

The specs are confusing on their speed examples, as it sounds like it also does regen on return stroke too (which would nice)?

NO, the return stroke is normal stroke and needs the pressure for detent release. You are in fast extend with the spool out fully. For max power, let off the lever to the soft detent and you return to slow mode and max pressure.

Look at the LSR-3060. Rapid extend log splitter valve.

Not until just now it sure does add some more options thanks for pointing that out!

How can it increase the force is what I am wondering? Does it do that somehow like a 2 stage I am not real smart on this stuff? I am just thinking out loud here but is it doing the same thing as the second stage of a pump with valving or something but remotely?

It looks like it will equal 15.7 tons force @2500 psi and my tractor is supposedly 2200 psi and is 8-9gmp so @ 3-4 gpm I wouldn't be running my engine flat out thats got me thinking seriously so if this would actually work it could be the simplest way except Id have to add remotes which I have the outlets for them now I believe.

Scratch all that I just talked to Prince and they said it wont work on anything OVER 4gpm so it would probably be way over worked even on my tractor hydraulic system, the LSR 3060 he said is made for the small electric splitters and it does regen on return stroke he said to speed it up.

So I am still in the search for the best power and also found out my tank is most likely too small its 1080ci so its less than 5 gal total so it worked fine with 11 gpm it may suffer @ 16+gpm is my guess.

Heck I may end up using the original pump on my gear reduction pto pump mount after all and maybe gear it so it runs a little faster than 3600rpm to get my speed up and I could live as it used to work but a little faster would be nice.

MY point in posting that valve was to run your tractor fast enough to produce 4 GPM, and the fast extend would be perfect. You have the pressure so the tonnage s there, and the cycle time should be good.

It is easy to compute the cycle time using your tractor as the hyd source, but is more difficult using the fast extend valve, as you will vary the stroke speed depending on how tough the wood is. It should be equal to a 22 GPM two stage pump.

You might try the tractor hyd first, but that means running the engine at max to achieve the cycle times.

Well that would be about the cheapest way for sure.

I will think about it still if you think my pump will still work. If mine is 8-9 @2200 rpm it stands to reason by my logic :) that at 1100 it could be 4-4.5 gph and that is exactly what my target is long as I can split wood.

JJ, I ordered the fast extend valve from Prince so once I get it I am going to run hoses to my cylinder and see how well it splits before I finish disassembling my splitter chassis.

I still need to put a pressure gage on my pump and see what it puts out that will answer some questions I may have later on on other things also.

Since the tank is part of the chassis if this works I wont be needing it and the actual design will change thanks again for your help.

Don't know what your FEL relief valve setting, but the relief for that valve says 2250 psi. I don't know if it is adjustable, and if it is, then adjust it to match your FEL psi.
