Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has or sues a spreadsheet for vehicle (truck, tractor, etc...) maintenance?? If so, it it something you would share??

My owners manual in the truck is getting full, and just a notepad for the tractor, looking to transfer all over.

Using Office for Mac 2011.

Thanks.

here is a free one,

Search results for "access databases" - Templates - Office.com

I downloaded it, but have not been disciplined enough to use it. If that one doesn't suit your need here is a link to the Microsoft template site all of which are free.

You'll need Access 2007 to run the database.

Yea, I saw that after I posted it. They have some for Excel also, I posted a link and then reread the post and saw he was using a Mac. So I deleted it and put the oops up instead.

I will go back on the site and find the two that I listed for Excel.

At each fill-up I write the mileage on the cc receipt and put it in an envelope in the glove box as an analog log. At oil and filter changes, I tear off the top of the oil filter box to write the pertinent info on (date, mileage, oil specs), and slip it in the same envelope. At the end of the year, a new envelope is used and the accountant uses the other envelope for tax info.

Again, looks like most are for Office 2007 or newer. They use different extensions then the older Office programs.

Ah come on Roy, nobody is acually using an older version than 2007 are they .

I update the full version of office with every new release. Then I get it through my employer at a very reasonable price. :)

I'm running Office 2003 on one PC, Office 2002 on another.
Microsoft did this same stupid thing about no backwards compatability 10 years or so ago...
You can save Office 2007 and 2010 in earlier formats though.

I see in another 7 post you are going to make it to the 10,000 mile post club, congratulations. You should be able to make that yet today. :)

I've been using Microsoft Works for many years. So I just set up my own spreadsheet on Works to keep a great deal more detail that most people do. Every time we even put gas in one, we write the odometer reading on the receipt so I can enter it on the spreadsheet later.

You can also get a docx converter from Microsoft to convert docx files to doc files.

You can download LibreOffice for free, for Windows, Mac, or Linux. It reads/saves Microsoft files.

Great program.

I've got that on one of my computers...I believe MS has a converter for Excel too. However, you may lose some formatting.

Oops, just reread your post, I see your using a Mac, sorry can't help you.

I prefer Excel as you can use it as an excellent database application and it also has the benefits of a spreadsheet for equations, etc. if you need them. It is one of the programs that transfers readlily between Macs and Windows machines, so if you change, have multiple computers running different OS's it will seamlessly transfer between them. It is one of the most versatile programs availble. My knowledge of softwares and capabilities are dated as I have not done any advance programming for systems since the mid 90's. But, Excel was one of our chosen programs for its ease of use and versatility of application, and compatability with multiple platforms. Word is clunky and MS insists on adding frills that make additional steps necessary and it is too "flowery" for me. Excel is clean and neat. The later versions of Excel (I am currently running the 2007 version.) is too flowery for me as well. The early versions are much cleaner, you have to manually write more to make it do what you want, but the basic program is sufficeint for most needs. It will readily transfer between Access and Word if you want that. I can't think of a reason why you would want a program like Access for doing this as it adds complexity and layers that serve no practical purpose. Word will work, but you would have to add tables or a template to make it work with repetive type entries. That is already done for you in Excel. I have all my equipment maintenance records in a single MS Excel workbook with individual worksheets assigned to each piece of equipment. It has worked well for me for over 20 years.

I should have been more clear, that will translate any office 2007/2010 files to the older format.

Thanks.

I use a simple system in Word. I have a log for each tractor. I start each entry with the date and the tractor hours then just type a narrative of what I have done, what parts I have used, what they cost, and any special tools or techniques used to get the job done.
