I don't see how they could fix it. Maybe install a buddy seat and provide someone to ride along and constantly remind the operator not to engage the differential lock when the machine is moving or when one of the rear wheels is rotating.

Engaging the differential lock when the machine is moving or one of the rear wheel is spinning will in all likelihood result in an expensive repairs.

As I said above, I'm not saying the diff lock pin should never break (nothing is totally unbreakable), just that if there were a bit more clearance in the bottom of the case the pin wouldn't get punched through the case. It would still require a repair, but it would be FAR less catastrophic and expensive.

Kubota could fix this design flaw by simply allowing more space in the bottom of the case to prevent the more serious damage.

My point is that if I'm the 5th customer of one small dealer to have this issue this year (how many hundreds or thousands more across all of the dealers and all of their production?), Kubota has a problem that needs to be fixed and I think that they should make it right with those of us who have suffered from their problem.

I hate to defend Kubota but... Possibly the dealer is not properly explaining (as has been done already in this thread) how to use the diff lock? That would be my first reaction to 5 customers of one small dealer all having the same problem. Just my 2:2cents:

I think the dealer might be blowing a little smoke here. Only maybe if the other 4 were in the same ser# group.

Perhaps there is space for the pin to sit sideways, but the pin fell just right and got wedged sideways between the gears and the transmission case...

What Gator said, sorry for your issue and wish you luck but anyone can sit back and quarter back what someone else should have done after the fact.

So they have to replace the case? it can't be welded or such?

Follow instructions, do not engage differential lock with wheels spinning, now that directions have been proven that they were not followed you want the broken pieces to magically vanish and not get wedged in the gears? Go ask Cummins about the Killer Dowel Pin and see what they say about that one.

By saying there was 4 others and maybe only one. If yours is the 5th, and I was the dealer I'll be calling kubota.

To the best of my knowledge, I did NOT step in the diff lock pedal with the wheels spinning. however the pin broke. All I'm saying is that if there was a bit of space in the bottom of the case, rather than a space smaller than the pin, the damage would not have been so catastrophic. To me, a somewhat minor, but predictable, failure that can't help but turn into a catastrophic failure is a design flaw.
