He sounds uninformed. He also must not read his own (JD) implement literature. JD offer several grapples to fit on the 400x :laughing:

Interesting you mention that:
When I was calling around to various dealers to find a SSQA adapter for my L3400HST, one of the dealers I spoke with said there was no use putting one on such a small tractor as the lift ability just wasnt enough to bother putting on pallet forks or anything else on it anyway.. I politely thanked him for his advice and continued calling until I found a good price on the OEM SSQA adapter from a dealer about an hour away. Who delivered it and a new bucket and helped me put it on. I have used the forks for many things and find them quite useful. I am not sure I have enough use for a grapple to justify buying one, but I may at some time.

So yes salesmen are often FOS

I got my 66" WildKat extreeme rock Grapple in and all I can say is WOW this thing is extreemly heavy duty and well built. It is much bigger and beefier that I had anticipated. It may actually be to big for my M5040 tractor. This is the 66" grapple with the rock bucket bottom and teeth.

Virtually no CUT sized machine including the relatively light M series really needs any grapple weighing more than about 400 lbs. Anything bigger is designed for a skidsteer and will only cut your net lift capacity. Sadly none of the grapple manufacturers seem to understand this simple axiom as they do 95% of their business with commercial skidsteer owners.

It's a little on the heavy side at 700lbs, but unlless you're using it at max cap. all the time you should be ok. If you think it's too heavy of a load just take less. I ran my 500 lb 66" grapple on my old LA854 loader and never had a single problem. Just make sure you have enough ballest.

I'm coming from the rear remotes forward along the left side of the 4120. Mounting a bulkhead on the tube that the 400x loader sits on and another bulkhead out the loader arm itself.

As stated before or elsewhere on TBN, I bought the bottom half of Wild Kat's 66" wide "HD Deep" grapple (just the bucket part), for $700, & it is massive; Prob meant for a skid steer. 1/2" steel for almost everything. It's also looong; I haven't measured the teeth, but they must be 3' long. All this adds up to: My lifting & curling capabilities seem to be greatly reduced. I can't curl things that I think I previously could with my OEM Kubota bucket.

I hate to complain about something being built "too tough", but this probably is, for my tractor anyway. I think it would be better if the steel was 3/8" thick instead, & if the teeth were at least 6" shorter, if not 9" or 12" shorter.

I think you have just described a light duty 48 inch grapple as being ideal. I agree completely.:laughing:
