Mowing with an IH Cub?

/ Mowing with an IH Cub? #21
My Dad still uses a cub for mowing hay with a 5' scikle bar and plowing snow in the winter. Great little tractor. Go for it!!!

They are a fun little tractor. I
Didn't like mowing with it because you have to go so slow. But it will do it. Mines a 48 that has been passed down from my great grandfather. I sold the belly mower and bought cultivators with the money. I just like to putt around on the old beast. Still one sweet a*s looking machine.

Yea, see? I would easily be the coolest guy in my suburban neighborhood if I mowed my grass with one of those. That's even higher-status than having a trophy wife that walks down to the road to get the mail every day.

yep. I had a neighbor that made fun of my small hp cub.

I drug him all over his yard with his crapsman wheels spinning. when i headed toward the blacktop he gave n as he didn't want to strip out the zinc/aluminum/plastic/potmetal drive gear assembly his 24hp lawnmower had. :)

i even gave him a good chance by letting him start to pull me backwards with my clutch in, then I eased the clutch out and started to go.. my rears never once spun. his made tracks all over his yard.. :)

Was there adult beverages involved with this?

Typically, you get around the "no live pto" issue by installing an overrunning clutch in the pto drive line. It's easy to do for mowers that attach to the rear hitch and are driven off a rear-facing pto. It may be a problem installing an ORC in your Cub if you're using a mid-mount (belly) mower.

my IH44 mower has an orc incorporated into the drive hub on the mower itself.

he needed one afterwards after thinking his 2500$ lawnmower would pull my 1800$ TRACTOR.. ;)

Hmmm....no live PTO. Didn't consider that, although maybe it's a don't care. Kind of a safety feature actually. Does it operate while you're in reverse?

As far as HP, my two current mowers have 11Hp and 16Hp respectively - plenty for cutting grass (it's a lawn, not a field).

My other question is that the tractor in question is supposed to be early 50's, but it is yellow. Re-paint or actually a later model? How do I tell?

I'm also interested in an A/C model C (wide front) with a bucket. That's similar money, but doesn't have a deck. I do like the orange...

lack of live pto is no issue.. start in a dead spot, or start the pto when not in forward gear, then shift into gear, assuming that the mower has an integral ORC...

also not that there is no starter neutral saftey interlock.. it will start quite happily in gear.. :)

mY 10HP ALLIS G AND SLIGHTLY MORE HP IH CUB will drag around the yard a 24hp craftsmann till the lawnmowers tires fall off.. :) ( yes.. BTDT )

The Allis G is my all-time favorite. Not much more wicked looking than one of those. They're priced a bit out of range around here, unfortunately.

That's slick:thumbsup:

when i bought the cub and mower.. I got it a lil cheaper as the owner said the mower hub was stripped and wouldn't turn the blade.. he had reversed the direction of the belt by twisting it on a couple pullies and it was driving the orc in free-wheel direction :)

unfortunately.. he had bolte the blades on to cut in that direction.. IF it had cut.. so had to swap those as well.

some people.. :)

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do:eek:.

Right now I'm struggling with the disc openers on my JD 71 Flexi-planter. The discs aren't turning freely so I need to remove them and probably replace the sealed bearings (it's a two-row planter). The little hex head screw-on caps have to be removed to get at the socket head bolts that hold the discs onto the planter. These hex heads are so worn that I can't get a socket on them. I'll try an easy out but I never have had much luck with those things (they usually break off). I'll probably end up welding a washer and hex head nut onto the cap. Idiotic design on JD's part.

yep.. probbaly bad design.

if you do ddrill for an ez out.. I've found the best way to help success is to drill as large a diamater as you can while not getting out of the bolt, this relieves pressure and allows the bolt to deform inward if needed, and also lets you use a larger extracor. I like square profile extractors vs fluted spiralones myself.. but have both and haveused both.

also.. any time I pull a bolt / nut off/out, if it is wore.. especially the inverted square and allen, I repalce it.

nothing like getting a stripped inverted allen out.. :(

Well I had a 50's cub, red in color, Flat-head.not a low boy. The engine was fine when it wanted to run. We pulled it a lot to start, finally re-wired it and new ignition. It had hydra lift, not all have that. It would tip easy on one side due to offset seating, and i did not have the wheel weights. It nearly tipped twice while i was mowing. It had 100 blade mott mower under it. A lot of sharpening involved. I still have a bucket of blades for it and a Ford mott...We sold the cub cheap, it had used me up...and my patience..

IMHO.. not alotta hp for a flail on a cub.. but they run a sickle bar decently.. even up to a 5' bar.. similar to an allis G.. etc.

Sg, that is right on, I had brand new piston rings and valve job. I had to weld up the water jacket on the head, with nickle rods. You engaged the mower in no grass or raised position and it did not like high grasses? I believe it was 4 ft wide...

/ Mowing with an IH Cub? #37
flail mowers are natures way to make you mow slower and need more hp to do the same job of another type of mower AND add more cost and maintenance :)

As I said earlier my Dad mows hay with a 5 foot sickle bar side mount mower on his cub every year. Not lots of hay, just enough for 2 or 3 beef animals. Pretty good for a guy in his 80's. Pretty good for a tractor in its 60's.

i'd love to find a decent sickle bar mower. not very popular down here.. thus hard to find...

The area does have a lot to do with it. Right now I can find you two sickle bar mowers for a cub within 7 miles of out house. They are pretty common around here and you see a lot of Cubs working. Most people get them because they are FAR stronger than a "garden tractor", easy to find parts for and can run tons of implements.
Mine is slowing going back together as I am completing a FULL rebuild (all new seals, bearing, 100% engine rebuild, etc...) only to be used for mowing the yard and putting a sickle bar on for trimming along our road. I have a 37hp Kubota but would rather mow with the Cub!!
